Tomorrow night we move from practicing in an outdoor gazebo to a new and larger indoor location. I am using a woman's nylon sockette ( they wear with sandals, I think ) and it doesn't seem to muffle the sound so I think things should go well. We have to vacate the room after 30 minutes of playing and wait for the air to change ( not sure how long this is going to be ) and when not playing we will be wearing face masks.
At the other trumpet site there is a long thread on whether music instruments are releasing dangerous levels of aerosols or whether thy are not. I haven't formed an opinion because how the hell do I know if a trumpet , for example, emits dangerous levels of aerosols or not. I just want to play and hopefully get back to some concert gigs, and to me the mask over the bell of my horn did not affect my playing by trying it out at home.
So, looking forward to tomorrow night.

RE: COVID-19, Community Band, Ideas for Us?
@Comeback
Hey, Jim, recording yourself is always a worthwhile thing to do. How you sound from behind the bell, compared to how you sound from in front of the bell can be very eye--oops, I should say ear-opening.
I also send recordings of myself playing to my sons, brother and sister, plus a few bandmates and they love to hear from me that way. -
RE: The New Reality
I'm taking advantage of my band down time by transposing a handful of my favorite ballads to make them a bit more challenging. They are pieces like Black Orhpeus, Stella by Starlight, Laura, Stardust, etc., that I play quite often. Sometimes I go too far and have to go back a bit. Anyway, it's something to do.

RE: I started a Youtube channel...
Nice work putting that video together. The images and music blend perfectly.

RE: Lew Soloff Warm Up
The Soloff is interesting and I particulaly like Kehaulani's offering, but honestly, for me these are practice routines and way too much for a warm-up.
I play with a demanding band in both gigs and practice sessions and I'd have nothing left if I used either of these two warm-ups, which is likely great for pro players...but I am no pro, just an amateur who stopped playing for money 50 something years ago.

@Dale-Proctor
Well, yeah, I guess so. I am my own worst critic and when I play alone I end up tearing myself apart. At least when playing with others, some are worse players than me so I feel good about myself...ha ha !!! -
RE: Bria Skonberg interview
I could listen to her all day...not just because she, like me, is Canadian but I love the smokey voice and the sounds she gets with her trumpet. In the video below, listen to that Satchmo influence. Gives me the goosebumps.
Thanks for that first vid on how she practices, Kehaulani I've never seen that one before.

Thanks, Steve, that was so funny, so uplifting, so makes you glad to be alive. And Bolero ? Well, in our younger years, my wife and I...naw, I won't get into that. Let's just say, it was one of our very top favorite pieces of music... -
RE: Rock, Pop, Classic 70's "Horn Bands" from back in the day?
Thanks for that great welcome. Nice going with the new site.

I think I've read enough about buzzing for now. I think I'll go play some ballads. George
Take requests? Do you know that old country love ballad, "If I Had To Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You?
Hah ! Oh, yeah , I know it well.

RE: Playing risks in Covid-time
Wow, Doc, that's just around the corner. So happy for you. Would sure love to see or hear it if anyone records it.
Have fun, my friend. -
RE: Trumpet Board Remote Performance
That was fantastic, guys. Love how you presented the end credits.

@Dr-GO
I have a feeling you will fit right in what that group, Doc. You are amazing. -
RE: Hello! Welcome to TB, who are you?
@IrishTrumpeter
Yeah, that's it, but the key I play it in would have the highest note a top space E and it sounds much better on the horn in a higher key. I saw an arrangement of it somewhere where the highest note was a G above the staff. I'm sure that would sound super great.
Even in that lower key you play now it will be good for developing the muscles in your chops. It not only sounds pretty but it's good for you, too... LOL ! -
RE: More physiological than medical
I couldn't agree more, Mark.
Music is magic in how it affects the soul.
Honestly, making music, and especially performing for an audience with my 5 piece combo back in the 50s and 60s was something I thrived on. Playing now, 50 years later, it has become my salvation.
Now, getting back to you and your eagerness to play the trumpet, just be sure you are not playing with a mouthpiece that is too large. It could be one of the things making above the staff difficult for you.

RE: Trumpet Board Remote Performance
Yeah I didn't get a connection from Doc's song changes to Girl From Ipanema at first but after I knew the name of the song I could hear it.
BTW, Doc, some nice trumpet work there.

RE: The New Reality
Well our 34 member band will resume weekly practice sessions next week, but only when they can be held in an outdoor setting. Only half the members are returning, and there will be no planned concerts for the time being. But I will be playing with others again and that's all that matters to me right now.

Definitely sounds like more than two trumpets. Great work , Doc. -
