@barliman2001
I am happy that the conductor recognized that you already had the better horn. And congratulations for winning that position with the band. Way to go !

Great playing for sure, and on a particular ballad I really dig.

LONG TONES
There is a discussion going on at the other site on long tones and I thought it would be interesting to see what members here think of them.
In 1953 I studied for 6 months at a conservatory but I was unsatisfied with the professor who taught trumpet. He was nasty and did little to help me. After I left the conservatory I took lessons from a local professional trumpet player who was rated one of the best all-round players in eastern Canada.
The first thing he had me do was play long tones and everything that didn't work at the conservatory now started to work. After a 50 year hiatus playing the trumpet again in my eighties was tough but good old long tones became the backbone of my technical studies, and even today, more than three years later, I work long tones into my morning exercises, and warm up on p-f-p long tones before my afternoon hour of playing tunes. And even after three lip injuries last year, long tones got me back in the saddle. But that's just me. Some say long tones do nothing for them. What about you ? -
RE: Favorite Music
@neal085 Wow, I had never heard that song by Satchmo. Everything about it is such a departure for the great one. Beautiful. Thanks.

RE: Set lists
@Dr-Mark said in Set lists:
Hi BigDub,
Yes, I would talk to the director. Lugging a NYC phone book sized set list is just crazy. If he/she wants that level of freedom, the set list needs to be digitized so you guys can carry all the songs on an IPad. If it's on an iPad, there's ease of portability, ease for the director because the songs can be pulled up alphabetically, and once its digitized, everyone can have access in case some of the songs get lost or destroyed which frees up the person responsible for getting the sheet music to the people.To be clear, it’s not the set list that is the problem. It’s the impulsive nature of the director. He gets a stray thought in the middle of the concert and decides we should do a number not part of the set list.
We have probably over a hundred possible tunes we could do, including many marches I have never played yet. That comes up during a concert at times as well.....let’s play so and so march.....I look over to my section mate, "never heard of it", he says, oh, I think we played that about ten years ago, once.My director and your director must be related, Wayne. What you stated happens now and then to me. But once is enough. I have only been with this band since April and there are many marches and a medley or two in our current play book I have not even had a chance to look at let alone play. But I like the guy so I don't complain.

@Kehaulani said in Favorite Music:
Along the lines of Sinatra with instrumental (band) is a very hip album, Sinatra and Basie at the Sands (Las Vegas).I may be wrong, but I think some of the songs were arranged by Quincy Jones.
You are correct, sir. Not only were the songs arranged by Quincy Jones, but he was also the conductor. I still have the LP released in July 1966 where it clearly states : Arranged and Conducted by Quincy Jones. The tracks were recorded during performances in January and February of 1966. It was and still is one of my favorite Sinatra albums.

RE: Re: Caruso on Piccolo trumpet
I was not contemplating, or even interested, in playing a piccolo, but I did find it quite interesting in reading about those here who do play it, especially Robin and Bertie.

RE: Music. What is It?
@J-Jericho
A very interesting video. With some of today's music I scratch my head, listen closely and try to make some sense of it, but I can't. IMHO, music without melody ( and all the things that make melody ) just isn't music and my ears just can't stand it. -

I become a very dark and mean person when I’m not playing enough - one of the many reasons I’ve never stopped. I like who I am a whole lot better when I’m playing, and so does everyone else!
Especially your husband if you are married...

RE: RIP Trumpet "Master"
I have learned a lot just reading some of Robin's replies and suggestions to those who sought advice, myself included. He may have sounded pompus to some, but many knowledgeable people come across that way, though they certainly don't mean to. There were times in some of Robin's posts that he actually came across as being quite humble.
I'D LOVE TO SEE ROWUK COME HERE !!!!

RE: Alpert's California Blues
I always had a soft spot for Alpert and his TJB, but I kinda like how he sounds at 84, :

RE: Keying ~fingering
I've always rested pinky on top of the pinky hook and the thumb between the first and second valve casing. I tried resting on the first valve casing only but found that my fingers tended to wander a bit, so I am back with thumb between first and second valve. This still works best for me, so regardless of what the experts say, you have to use what works for you.

I didn't have any trouble accessing the site. I'm sending Bob a request for his Fake Book. -
RE: The value of scales
I had a feeling that this thread would eventually become a victim of humor. And that is fine, but for players who will one day face the fact that old age and injuries can and will happen, the intent of this thread was to let them know that there are solutions, and maybe scales will be one for them as it is for me.

RE: What Is Your Favorite Version of the National Anthem?
Being a Canadian, I will just say this: you are not alone, my American friends. I have heard Canada's National Anthem mangled more times than I can count.
BTW, that little girl's version of SSB was truly precious.

RE: Special music reading glasses
@bigdub
Hi Wayne. I got unlocked by using Google today. I sure didn't get any help from the administrator, even though I got his e-mail address and sent him several notes. Oh, well...if I get locked out again I will say farewell to TB.About glasses. Reading glasses and my regular glasses didn't work for reading music. I got a special pair of glasses for that .Measurements were taken of how far I sit from the music stand. I've been using them for 4 years now, though I had to change the lens last fall. These glasses work just fine.
