    • RE: Cataract Surgery

      @barliman2001

      Thanks for the reply. The surgeons seem to vary in their instructions and I do believe that has a lot to do about how well the surgery went. BTW, I own a P.E.T.E. that I do a daily exercise with the chops. The Doc had no problem with that.
      So I stopped playing on Wednesday and after 7 days I will start up in a very gentle soft and easy manner, and sticking to the staff. After that I'll see how things are going and act accordingly.

      Thanks everyone for your excellent help and advice.

      @dr-go

      Absolutely great work by Wayne. And let me also say that you have written a beautiful piece of music, Doc.

      And, if Wayne is reading this, perhaps he would like to send me a pdf file of that arrangement. He has my e-mail address.

      These should all ( except the web designer ) be beaten to a pulp with a Mendini trumpet...☺ ☺ ☺

      Your trumpet looks like a Bach TR300H2 student horn. I used one to make my comeback with in 2016. Great horn but wanting a bit when playing the higher register. Perhaps Bach is connected with Thoman.

      @Kehaulani
      I can admire gaudy, but that doesn't mean I would want to own it. Doc is a brash kinda guy so I feel this horn suits him...LOL !

    • RE: playing with a full lower de nture

      Well after a visit with my dentist I discovered that I will not be reduced to playing with a full lower denture. She can save the two existing teeth, replace the crown I lost and I'll end up with a new partial to give me a full set of teeth to play with.\ in my lower jaw. Hip, Hip, Hooray !!!

      Turns out my dentist is also a musician and she understood my problems immediately.

      @j-jericho said in Is there such a thing as a “natural player”?:

      I think that many, if not most, people have certain natural abilities that with practice enable them to do relatively quickly and easily what others may not even begin to be able to accomplish. Does this make any of them/us a "natural"? I believe so.

      Well said.

      I am so very sorry to hear of the loss of your mom, which is enough for you to have to deal with without having to also deal with family members. My heart goes out to you, Butch.

    • RE: playing with a full lower de nture

      @rowuk

      Those are two good reasons for any problems you may be having, sir.
      Right now I am trying to play on only 2 front teeth when my embouchure was used to much more than that, so I am now dealing with a cranky embouchure. Once I have the dental work done at least I will be playing with a new partial that hooks on to exixting teeth to keep it in place, and I am already used to that. But another change for the embouchure. Oh, well it will all work out.

      Well, I am surprised. This fellow can sing. I never thought I would ever hear those old ballads from the lips of Robert Palmer. Thanks for sharing.

    • RE: Artist on BOARD

      I am aware that there are artists who are insulted if you say their work looks like a photograph. I've known one personally in the past who threw a punch at me for saying so. I've dabbled with painting myself and tried but never could get that photographic look. I am drawn to art that has that look and I admire the talent of those who can do it. When I made the remark about Wayne's work, I truly meant it as a compliment, and I wasn't worrying about getting slugged because he lives many, many miles away from me...☺

      @GeorgeB & @grune - gotta remember i am a complete beginner to any musical instrument and was playing a plastic trumpet - i know it wont be up there with the best given what i paid, but for me the difference is amazing

      If the difference is amazing to you, then that is all that matters. I really like your enthusiasm. You really want to learn to play. That is so important. Good luck, my friend.

    • RE: KGU Brass Mod Kits & Boosters

      @stumac

      If these kits add weight to the horn I'm guessing it darkened the sound considerably, which a lot of jazz players like, and perhaps Bob is one of them.

    • LONG TONES

      There is a discussion going on at the other site on long tones and I thought it would be interesting to see what members here think of them.
      In 1953 I studied for 6 months at a conservatory but I was unsatisfied with the professor who taught trumpet. He was nasty and did little to help me. After I left the conservatory I took lessons from a local professional trumpet player who was rated one of the best all-round players in eastern Canada.
      The first thing he had me do was play long tones and everything that didn't work at the conservatory now started to work. After a 50 year hiatus playing the trumpet again in my eighties was tough but good old long tones became the backbone of my technical studies, and even today, more than three years later, I work long tones into my morning exercises, and warm up on p-f-p long tones before my afternoon hour of playing tunes. And even after three lip injuries last year, long tones got me back in the saddle. But that's just me. Some say long tones do nothing for them. What about you ?

      Hey, Doc, that is so kind of you to say that about Kehaulani because that is exactly how I think of him.

      Yeah I am done with safaris, too. Things had changed quite a bit for me starting up again at the age of 79 and not playing for 51 years. For one thing I had a set of upper dentures, and I am sure that was the main reason the 10.5C just didn't work.
