RE: How Does The Theory You've Learned Apply To Improvising?
I find that theory study makes the most sense when you immediately play what you have just learned. Analysis of improv solos is also helpful to understand the relationship of the theory behind what you hear, especially if you transcribe and analyze your own solos. One of my college teachers had me do a lot of that, and it really helps me to understand what I want to play and make what I hear in my head become reality.

RE: NAMM 2020
@SSmith1226 I didn’t get to do much playing at Yamaha due to other commitments- it’s kind of a pain that they are in such a separate spot from everything else! I did get to have a great conversation with Wayne Bergeron when I was over there for our dealer meeting, though. He had the finalized version of the gen II LA, which looks fantastic! It’s got the same valve block as the new Shew, but they anneal it a bit differently. It also has heavy phosphor bronze bottom caps. He had to pull it out of his personal case to show me - that was pretty awesome! I’m pleased to say I was able to have a constructive adult conversation and didn’t fangirl squeal once!
I have played the gen I and II Vizutti - I like the gen II much better. To me it plays kind of in between the New York and Chicago - a bit of both worlds there.
Our meeting with Yamaha went very well, and we will have more great stuff on the way soon! All of the companies we are a dealer for treated us so well - we must be pretty important to them -
RE: Covid-19 Closing Down Music Venues
I’ve considered some small jams with a few friends while no gigs are happening, but plan on taking advantage of the practice time while I’m home earlier most nights. So much to do, and usually not enough time to get to it all, so might as well come back from this break better than I was!

RE: Buy your horns here, not there!
I’m surprised my workplace hasn’t showed up on this list, but we offer a 30 day return on most stuff, and have some great horns come through the shop! Ever have questions about any specific horn I’m happy to answer them - I go through all the brass personally!

RE: Current Italian trumpet sensation
We are the sum of everything we listen to and practice, plus our unique physiology. It’s almost impossible to sound exactly like someone else, but why would we want to?
They sound great, though - I enjoyed this clip! -
RE: What is this?
Depending on size, I’ve seen Eb alto flugel that look similar. Without seeing it in person, not sure !

RE: Buy your horns here, not there!
I’m surprised JoshLandress isn’t on this list yet - besides being a great tech he sells a lot of nice horns. He’s a super nice person, too! I’ve bought horns from him, sold with him, and was a repair client when I was on the East Coast. I’ll throw in another vote for Trent Austin as well, who is one of my favorite people, and i’ve Had good experience with Dillon Music as well. There’s still some nice small business choices out there!

RE: What happened to Jazz programming?
Until I started studying Jazz as a kid, my mother thought Jazz was Guy Lombardo and thought she hated it. After being exposed to my Jazz education, she now has a collection that rivals mine and listens regularly! She plays flute quite well and took lessons growing up, even went to All State, but never really listened to anything but Classical and Rock before I was around.

RE: New Player has entered the Game
We ship internationally daily, and have a very good selection right now. The majority of what we carry are pro models, But we do have some intermediate and student from Jupiter and Conn-Selmer right now. My favorite of the intermediates is the Jupiter 1100SQ - great playing horn that feels more like a pro than a student. More horns are arriving daily, so check our website or message our Facebook page for more info!

RE: 3rd Valve for Olds Recording Trumpet?
@Dr-GO looks like he’s looking for a 3rd valve slide, not a piston. Might be difficult to come by, though Allied might carry a compatible part. Only a shop with an account number can order from Allied, so check to see if it’s possible to do that.

RE: Lick from Gypsy
@Kehaulani said in Lick from Gypsy:
Doesn't he mean to alternate on each eighth between an open "G" followed by a note fingered with the third finger? It's goal is a more percussive effect than a melodic one? What's the tempo?
That’s pretty much exactly what I said. I haven’t played this show, but have seen similar notation many times in other shows and charts.

RE: Recommendations for used silverplated professional trumpet
I’ve played those 3 models - the Getzen is a pretty decent all around horn, the Lynx is a lighter weight lead horn, and the Yamaha depends on what era it’s from. I used a Lynx for several years for some New Orleans style brass band gigs, and it worked quite well in that setting. A friend had the Canadian Brass model and used it regularly in everything from brass quintet to big bands. The 6335 used to be one of Yamaha’s top level pro models, but now there many more to choose from with the 8335 and 9335 models that are just much better designed, and better players. Of course, condition is a big factor on any of them, especially the Yamaha. Yamahas that have been damaged never really feel the same again in my experience.
For modern horns in the budget category, you might want to take a look at the Jupiters. The XO series are excellent players, and the SQ intermediate models are more of a stripped down pro model than a dressed up student, and play very well. I actually keep one under my bench at work to practice on, and while it’s not as good as my Adams, I could easily gig on it if needed. I’ll include the link for the business I work for, but we currently don’t have any pro horns under $1200. New stock comes in all the time, though - if you ever have any questions about horns we have in stock I’m always happy to answer them!

RE: Covid-19 Closing Down Music Venues
I lost about $1400 in May alone due to cancelled gigs. I feel VERY fortunate that I don’t need my gig and repair income to pay my bills, and have even been able to take advantage of the deals right now and get myself a new car. When I was in college before I joined the Navy, missing one day of work meant I might not eat that week, so I really understand what a lot of people are going through right now. We definitely need better programs/ different solutions to be able to deal with crisis like these.

I’ve signed up and will be uploading video. Playing from my front yard and will see how many neighbors come out.

RE: Kelly mouthpieces (plastic, acrylic, lexan, whatever...)
@ButchA they are great for parades - it’s exactly what they’re meant for, and sizes run pretty true so they’re comfortable and easy to play. I used one for quite a while in the Navy in extreme cold weather playing and marching. I eventually switched over to an ACB acrylic top on brass backbore that matched my usual mpcs, and they do project better, but you will be just fine on a Kelly. I spoke to the folks that make them at NAMM this year - super nice people, making a product they use themselves. I’ve gifted them to friends and students - one friend’s little kids had all but destroyed her favorite mouthpiece and she was about to start playing in a community band again. I got her one in purple, and no matter how many times her kids got it, there wasn’t a scratch on it!
