I was impressed with the quality of care I received at Providence Sacred Heart Hospital, but it is sure great to have a professional trumpeter/physician/friend to answer my questions.

      Thanks, Gary!

You are so welcome my trumpet playing brother!

I'm assuming it is OK to unplug myself to play (the hose interferes with mouthpiece placement).

If you have not yet done so, purchase a pulse oximeter from a local pharmacy (most sell them at a cost of about $6). Apply it while oxygen is in place, then take it off and start playing the trumpet and after 2 minutes, retest with the pulse ox. I am willing to bet during playing the oxygen saturation may increase.

I was in intensive care for 3 weeks in 2014 from massive pulmonary embolisms and had my pocket trumpet and Yamaha silent mute with me, and found my pulse ox raised by 6% while playing the trumpet.

My question is as follows: My apartment living forces me to use a practice mute, and I'm using the Yamaha Silent Brass on my big horns and a Denis Wick on my piccolo, so I'm wondering, will the back pressure (especially with the Wick) be a factor preventing me from practicing at this time?

      Your experiences are most welcome!

The back pressure is actually therapeutic. It is known in the medical world as PEEP (Positive End Expiratory Pressure). It will help remove the inflammatory fluid more than any medicine can with the back pressure pushing fluid from the air sacks into the interstitial space which will move it back into circulation.

The ejection fraction of the heart is excellent, likely more then mine.

Did your physician put you on colchicine? That will help heal the myocardial inflammation from the viral attack.

Man. You had this bad. I believe being a trumpet player may have saved the day for you. If all goes well in 3-6 months you should be back on room air.

      Or the English Translation:

It is important to learn to manage your rest: a drop of medicine cures, a spoon can kill

An interesting concept that does apply. Dosing the exact amount of time one plays during a session is not a "one dose applies to all" concept and varies very much with an individuals skill and endurance level.

As a physician, I have best learned how to titrate medications to optimize benefit and minimize side effects in for my individual patients. As a musician, I can only prescribe the absolute dose of performance time to myself, as it is very difficult to use my personal experience as a set prescription for others.

What Grateful player describes is normal muscle physiology and trying to train muscle development. This needs to obey the rules of muscle development, through muscle physiology and biochemistry principles. I taught muscle physiology and biochemistry at a medical school for 27 years. I have been able to use this knowledge to apply it to a method of developing a safe and optimal trumpet embouchure, as is outlined below:

When control is lost and repetitively increases in intensity, it is time to put down the horn. Loss of control means fatigue has set into embouchure muscle. Initial fatigue is not damaging but is giving advanced warning that blood flow to muscle groups is compromised. At this point, lactic acid builds. If this continues without rest, the acid environment leads to muscle fiber strain. If this continues then the condition progresses to sprain. This then begins a process of remodeling (disrupting the initial efficient architecture of the motor units connection to on another). That process then progresses to negatively impact the embouchure from that point on disrupting the initial efficient natural architecture, irreversibly.

Carmine himself may be good for playing 40 minutes a day and that may be what he finds is needed to progress, but he is making this recommendation for an individual that has an embouchure that has matured and had the chance to develop and adapt to handle more stressful challenges.

My recommendation would be to start the series but as soon as control is lost to end the session. Note the time it had taken to get to that point. Keep practicing to that point for the next 2 weeks. Then in the 2 weeks that follow, try to increase the session by another 5 minutes. Then stay there again for another 2 weeks. Then add another 5 minutes and repeat the cycle. After a month or so, you can then meet the initial threshold of the 20-40 minute practice range.

    • RE: Hello to all on Trumpet boards, and any Olds fans

I am a big Olds fan. I have currently 4 Olds trumpets, 2 Recordings (one LA and one Fullerton), 1 Super Recording and an Ambassador.

It may sound crazy to all here but my favorite of all these horns is my Ambassador. Tom Green supped it up by putting on custom finger rings and added a gold flaked finish on the horn body, leaving the brass slides intact. He also left the brass intact for the Ambassador engraving but gold flaked around it such that it looks very much like Harley Davidson badging. I do not know if it is the gold flaking or not, but when I got that horn back from Tom, it had a really rich dark sound, very close to my Martin Committee. It is the darkness in tonal quality of my Olds horns, that puts this horn as my favorite.

My Recordings are my second favorite, with a level of darkness I appreciate in a horn but not as dark as the Ambassador. While both Recordings to me sound the same, I usually choose the LA over the Fullerton as the rose flowered engraving is larger on the LA model and looks cooler when playing out.

The Super Recording is an amazing instrument in such a different way. It does play much brighter so works well as a lead horn. It also glides more easily into the upper range with much less resistance than both the Recordings. With that said, the Ambassador has nearly identical resistance in the high range as the Super Recording.

I still have a Charlie Melk refurbished Olds Super Recording, Serial Number 8385 and while $4,500 is a reasonable price, would not sell mine for any price.

I played it for a year or so as a lead trumpet, until my Harrelson Summit was delivered. I have used it rarely ever since; however, it is nice to know I have a backup for my Harrelson should it ever require time in the shop for repair.

      @barliman2001 Wise words

I am put in mind of a trumpet player who travelled to an Islamic country where music was banned and the immigration staff wanted to confiscate his trumpet on entry, but when the player played for them to demonstrate just how quiet he played they quickly realized they were quite wrong and then allowed the player in with his instrument without any issues, they just asked him to be respectful.

I purchased a really inexpensive pocket trumpet for a business trip I was to take to Saudi Arabia, with the anticipation that it may be confiscated. And so it was. Three times. Each time the individual taking the horn took it to their supervisor and each time the supervisor asked me kindly my intent in bringing the horn. I would then show the supervisor my Yamaha silent mute, then explained, my intent was only to practice the horn in my hotel room with the silencer intact so no one would be able to hear me. The supervisor for each occasion appreciated my discussion and in each case, returned the horn to me.

It is however a sad state of affairs when a restrictive government to many liberties such as Saudi Arabia will yield to reasoning, but Disney will not.

But we are where we are and if you found a way to bring a mouthpiece onboard a Disney cruise Disney will find a way to ban it and punish you for doing it.

I have been on, I am guessing now, 6 Disney Cruises and have taken my mouthpiece onboard all of those occasions only to practice it daily on the veranda into a towel so both said towel and ocean waves drown out the sound. And to date have been successful in not having them take my mouthpiece from me. With that said, I always take my least favorite mouthpiece with me just in case.

@Dr-GO The whole idea of a virtual trumpet with a USB port for a real mouthpiece sounds pretty cool! Just so you know, the app doesn't have that feature right now. But diving deeper into it could be interesting - it seems like a unique concept that needs a bit of checking out.

Again, can we get this feature by September?

    • RE: Customized Olds Recording Model

The BEST trigger option is no trigger: My Martin Committee has the slide eliminated as it is not needed as intonation is pitch perfect without it.

Then next easiest feature is then the Olds trigger slide concept. So easy to use, and so ergonomically friendly.

      To Healthy Smile:

Virtual Trumpet. This could be an intriguing feature. Does this enable you to plug in an actual mouthpiece through a USB port and then play a trumpet feature on your site?

Going on a Disney Cruise in September and they do not allow musical instruments on the ship. They do allow lap tops. So if you have this feature, man am I sold. If you don't have this feature, could it possible be created... by September?

What ever method decided, I cannot expand any higher on my transposition training I received from Mick Dennisen when he was teaching me at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. At the time he had me run through many, many months of mental torture (like learning a new language with EVERY key change), it has paid in spades many many years later. Whether playing off the piano score in small group ensembles or going though various versions of Organ Music in so many keys for non-Bb instruments, it has been a real career enhancer to go into to any new performance rehearsal and playing off a score with my Bb trumpet in hand, and play any original keyed arrangement with minimal effort.

I played a Christmas Concert at a local club 2 nights ago where one of my big bands performs every 3rd Thursday evening. This is a picture of the band:

And this is the picture looking in the other direction at the crowd (dancers). The place was packed and full of Christmas Cheer (in part due to the fact that the venue has a very full service bar). One of the patrons actually gifted me with a "Bee's Knees" during the break!

      Congratulations Dale!

I am playing the Christmas Eve service with the Lutheran Church in my city. It is just me and the organist (an amazing 4 keyboard instrument with a very big sound). These our the songs we will be playing:

      In Dulci Jubilo
I Am So Glad Each Christmas Eve (Jeg er så glad hver julekveld)
Angels We Have Heard On High (Descant Trumpet)
Angels, from the Realms of Glory (Descant Trumpet)
What Child is This? (Communion Hymn with Harmon Mute)
Joy To The World (Descant Trumpet)
For Unto Us a Child Is Born G.F. Handel (Descant Trumpet - which has the last 3 measures toggling around the E above staff - a rather vociferous send off!

I am much grateful for the Dayton Musicians Union (AFM) that has contracted me with this performance now for the 6th consecutive year.
