You should oil your trumpet / cornet / flugelhorn probably min 1x a day (every day you play it, that is). You can't technically "over-oil" your horn; if you do so, you'll just end up with a bunch of nasty oil in your lap. You can, however, certainly under-oil it, and this could result in damage to your valves.

RE: Moderator absent...
Wow. That sounds like a blast. I wish I had my EU passport already so I could join you. Hopefully the forum won't catch on fire while you're away.

RE: where are they made ?
Do we differentiate between Chinese and Taiwanese manufacturers? My experience with Taiwanese makers has been fairly positive.

RE: A real OLD comebacker here
Maybe I'm the only one who thinks that it's ironic that the opposite of "comeback" is "goaway". Could I be a "goaway" trumpeter?

Do away with Electoral College, and we'll have a true democracy, which is defined by two wolves and a sheep voting on what's for dinner.
I'm not convinced a "true democracy" is the answer.
I seem to remember studying this in school at one point. We read a book where the author described Republicanism as the virtuous form of government, while absolute democracy was the antithesis. Can't remember the author, now. Wish I did.

The Bach website still says "Made in the USA." But that might mean the parts are made all over the world and a little final soldering is done in Ohio.
Yeah, that doesn't mean much anymore I'm afraid.

One thing that TH has that would help is a vibrant marketplace. How can we grow that?
Well, I can certainly make changes to the software end of things. The thing is, however, it doesn't make a big difference how good the site is if nobody uses it. That's the thing about forums: there must needs be a critical mass of users before it becomes steadily trafficked. We are far from that point.

RE: No real gains on anything more than 40-45 minutes of practice.
Pressure is rarely an issue in and of itself. It's more often than not a symptom of the underlying issue. Therefore, it's hard to say what is "too much" pressure and what is not. However, if you feel any pain at all, you are probably hurting yourself. No pain no gain does not apply to trumpet playing!

But, I mean, from a software standpoint, I'm a very good developer. I could make a better site than Reverb. Yes, I said that. But, I am confident in my abilities ;). However, the question usually comes down to: how should I spend my time? Software takes a lot of that.

Should I go to graduate school?
I am posting this here because there may be some student, somewhere in the world who will stumble across our forum with this very question: "Should I go to graduate school in music?"
My answer: No.
Well, maybe. Probably not would be the best answer. There was a time that I considered graduate school in music. I studied music as an undergrad and had high hopes of "making it" in the classical music world. After auditioning for the "big-name" schools like Rice, Colburn, etc, I was not accepted by any and only wait-listed by one, very expensive East Coast school which I shall not name. I then considered a couple of small, state schools for graduate school, but I could see the path those lead to and I jumped ship. At this moment in time, I look back at the wisdom and strength it took me to say no to an idea fixed in my mind for so long.
Why do we focus so much on the negatives of obtaining an MA and/or DMA? It's simple: there are a lot of negatives, or, shall I say, simple realities of life. One does not focus much on reality in the sheltered womb of undergraduate studies, but it would be wise for any student (who has never had to be fully independent or financially support a family) to consider the sometimes harsh realities of life that cannot be ignored for any dream.
This blog shares 100 very well-written and powerful reasons not to attend graduate school.

RE: C Trumpets: Bach vs Yamaha vs Vintage Besson vs....
@flugelgirl said in C Trumpets: Bach vs Yamaha vs Vintage Besson vs....:
I wouldn’t really go for a vintage C if you want something reliable unless you’re certain it’s in good condition. Many of them do not really have great intonation, and were built with a different sound concept in mind than what’s currently acceptable for an orchestral setting. However, I play a vintage Schilke, it plays quite well in tune, but I use it more for church services and brass quintet than anything else. My last C was a French Besson Classic and they are quite good for any situation- built by Kanstul and can be picked up at a fair price. Good one to look for - I only sold mine because it didn’t suit me as well as my Schilke does. We have plenty of Yamaha in stock, and my favorites are the Chicago and the NY with Malone bell. PM if you’re interested in one of them and I can tell you my personal favorites in stock as I play test them all. When testing, I check for intonation, resonance, and general ease of play, and if the horn meets that criteria and I could gig comfortably with it tomorrow, I recommend it first to customers.
www.brassandwinds.comThanks. I think that I will save up and purchase a Yamaha. They are incredibly reliable and hold their value. It's like a Toyota. You always know what you're getting. Maybe a bit "boring" in that regard, but it's a tool and those tools perform their job very well.

RE: Saturn
I heard a story of a crocodile that lived in the Berlin Zoo during the Nazi Germany era. After the end of the war, somehow the Soviets ended up with the animal, which only recently died. It was considered the last "German POW."
The crocodile's name? Saturn. True story.

I use Everclear. 95% Alcohol. I drink a big swig then play my horn. Kills everything in it.
Including brain cells.

RE: Selmer Trumpet Bell Tapers?
I can tell you that my Radial bell is very, very large. I will have to measure it tomorrow to see precisely how large, but larger than almost all modern production trumpets.
