      Maynard was probably too nice to be a disciplinarian,
      relying on someone else to do the necessary dirty work for him.
      Stan Mark was apparently the disciplinarian for 9 years
      so when the other band members rebelled against Stan Mark
      Maynard fired Stan Mark by giving him a steak and wine dinner, not the way that Buddy Rich used to fire people:

      Does anyone kow how strict or loose Maynard was as a band disciplinarian?

        Where does he say he was the disciplinarian and that Maynard was too nice and relied on someone else?

          @Kehaulani

          I didn't make a claim.

          I asked a question based on appearnces.

          "Apparently" has the same root as "appearnces".

              I've never heard anything bad about Maynard. But we Canadians are known to be well mannered...☺

                This is not a bash Maynard thread, but to give balance, I understand he was pretty stingy with wages.

                  Canadians are not well-mannered. It's called passive-aggressive. 😁

                    Sometimes, musicians may become incontinent of urine, especially when playing high notes, loudly. I call that pissive-agressive.

                      I met Maynard at a rehearsal that he came to to hear our big band when he was in town. He was very kind to me and actually GAVE me (as in gifted me) the Jettone Studio B that I use to this day. So if he was a disciplinarian, he was a very kind and nurturing disciplinarian, at least from my experience.

                        By the way, I still keep in touch through messaging with Alan Wise, who played with me in the Statestman Big Band, and then went on to play with Maynard. Then next time we message I will ask him for his impressions of Maynard as a disciplinarian. No better way than to hear it from someone who worked under him.
