A new piece. This is five miles from my house. In NJ. Yup. It’s true. We don’t live at Newark Airport!744545C7-6A43-4460-9375-E98CF9400653.jpeg

Man, I love these scenes. I really miss the cold, snowy weather (and warm, cozy hearths). Keep it up - as if, it seems, you wouldn't.

Took some reference photos before delivering a recent painting to folks in PA along the Delaware River and this is what I ended up with....06B7B84D-557B-4F1B-8E55-04FA35747F7A.jpeg

Are you like Bob Ross, no living beings except for maybe a V-shaped bird in the distance? 😄
                Another nice painting, BTW.

It is based on a photograph from a Time LIFE coffee table book of the Cowboys of the West. It is pretty famous, yes. I added color, different background, a western town from my own reference photos....good eye!

Let me share why I don’t care to be compared to Bob Ross by way of this article: https://www.artsy.net/article/artsy-editorial-bob-ross-owes-happy-trees-forgotten-painter

In the article it tells how Bob Ross learned the technique and subsequently steamrolled over William “Bill” Alexander, who taught him the entire wet on wet technique. Bob Ross was Bill Alexander's protege. Ross went on to overshadow Bill Alexander, but not before putting his own name on all of the tools and paints and materials originally sold by Alexander. The difference? Ross's handles were white. Alexander's where natural wood tone. Even the phrase, “Happy Little Trees”, he stole from Bill. That is why I didn’t care for him too much nor enjoy being compared to him..
                              See for yourself.

What is your opinion of John Gnagy? I remember, as a young child, his drawing TV shows in the 1950’s. According to what I read. He started his TV show in 1946. I also remember my mother owning a “John Gnagy Drawing Kit”.
                                Those were much simpler times!

I didn’t have any negative feelings toward him. I think my attention span was a bit challenged at that stage of my life. Later on I would stand by my Mother and watch her paint. I did a lot of that. Oddly enough she would ask me my opinion on something she might have been struggling with. Why? I had never even painted yet, and she seemed to think I had an idea or two already as a pre teen! She is still living, by the way. Also I spent time with her cousin who was a full time artist who had a lot of influence on me for sure.

BoB Ross, to me, didn't give enough continued credit to William Alexander, but that's not to say that he gave none. In the beginning, there was a relationship between Ross and Alexander that not only related to painting technique, but to the materials, itself; cleaning supplies, paint, etc. Check out this documentary.

I've always called Ross a "warmed-over Bill Alexander". Most of Ross' followers probably don't even know who Alexander is.

IMO, Alexander is a much better painter than Ross, but Ross is a better teacher. And in the popularity and accessibility of himself, combined with the simplicity of the style itself, it has made painting relatively painless and satisfying to a large group of people.

Regarding the article itself, much of the initial information could be had by just reading Alexander's
                                    autobiography.

As an aside, Ross is an Air Force, not Army veteran.

Agree. He was in the right place at the right time and he was certainly an opportunist to the highest degree. I can learn from everyone, and he’s no exception.
On a personal taste note- I would watch both of them on Saturdays and almost always have the same reaction about 3 quarters of the way through: STOP! That’s about when things went downhill with both of them. The painting could have even been pretty good, until they continued and in my opinion, ruined it.
