It might be interesting for some forum members to post accounts of community band performances in a single thread. If such a thing has been started previously, please forgive me.

My community band’s most recent concert was last Tuesday night. It was held in the large performance hall of our local university, which is normal. Several hundred people were in attendance. Selections played in the first half of the concert were: Sea Songs by R.V. Williams; Solas Anne by S.R. Hazo; Festivo by V. Nelhybel; Rifton Wed by J. Giroux; and Armenian Dances by A. Reed. Selections played in the second half were: Circus Thrills March by D. Blackwell; Zampa by L.J.F. Herald, The Phantom of the Opera arr. by W. Barker; Star Wars the Phantom Menace arr. by D. Blackwell; and Seventy Six Trombones arr. by L. Anderson.

The concert was well received and the band enjoyed a standing ovation at its conclusion. My personal favorite number was Armenian Dances. I played 2nd trumpet and enjoyed being challenged by its rhythms and other distinctive features. My 88 y/o mother found her favorite in Seventy Six Trombones. Our next concert is scheduled for May 3. In light of increasing COVID19 concerns, I sure hope we get to perform it.

      Jim

My favorite memory of playing a community band concert occurred about 40 years ago. The band was so-so for the most part, and during an outdoor concert in a city park, the piece we were playing (I don’t remember what it was) fell completely apart about halfway through. The conductor gave us an abrupt cutoff, and then yelled out “Letter D!”. We started there and finished the piece to a big round of applause...😁

There’s been a bunch of rehearsals and gigs cancelled in my area due to the COVID-19 freak out. I get hired pretty regularly as a sub for community band stuff to read down shows when they are missing a member or need some extra oomph in the section. This time of year I’m normally doing some work as an improv coach for student jazz groups as well, and most of my bookings for March have been cancelled due to schools and other venues closing to outside events until further notice. It’s pretty frustrating! My husband and I are booked to play on a friend’s college senior recital, and we’re hoping that it doesn’t get cancelled as well. Hopefully this will end soon, as I am scheduled as a mentor for local KNKX radio School of Jazz series, and am looking forward to it! We will see......

The only thing infectious about this medium is the high quality of information you are giving reaching many, many ears!

My heart goes out to you Flugelgirl. Your local being Washington State (Seattle in vicinity) does not help your cause either. I too hope this "contained" out break ends quickly.

Looking at the death rate since US stats have been reported is around 7% (higher than the 2% in Asia). Is there reason for concern? You bet. So cautious and judicious of choosing venues is warranted. Were the risk is higher, caution will be ramped up. So again, my heart goes out to you Flugelgirl.

My good fortune on this virus is, that while my evening gigs may be impacted negatively, eventually, my other profession keeps me very busy during the day. The most frustrating thing about my day gig, is I can only tell my patients it is NOT the flu (as I can test for this), and that it is another virus, of which, in Ohio, we have no COVID-19 test kits!

@Dr-GO even though it’s a radio broadcast, it is in conjunction with a local school group. Whether their district will shut down or not we will see, as they are a bit outside the area that is currently shut down. I’m hoping that the radio session date of April 20th will stay on track but there’s always the possibility of delay.
My day job is covering the slack as well - people like to shop online when they are stuck at home, so our sales are increasing. I just may end up having to chem clean more horns that get returned!
