Hello to all on Trumpet boards, and any Olds fans
-
Hello. I would like to introduce myself.
My name is Andy Stark and live in the UK. I am a former Royal Marines musician, but have been out for many years and mainly teach brass and still play professionally
I have a number of trumpets mainly Schilke, but my favourite is a 1950 Olds Recording ( restored by Charlie Melk ) and a 1955 Olds Recording.
I am after a Super Olds Recording in good condition or restored and was wondering if anybody knew of one for sale.
Thank you
Andy -
There's one for sale right now, see Classifieds

I am a big Olds fan. I have currently 4 Olds trumpets, 2 Recordings (one LA and one Fullerton), 1 Super Recording and an Ambassador.
It may sound crazy to all here but my favorite of all these horns is my Ambassador. Tom Green supped it up by putting on custom finger rings and added a gold flaked finish on the horn body, leaving the brass slides intact. He also left the brass intact for the Ambassador engraving but gold flaked around it such that it looks very much like Harley Davidson badging. I do not know if it is the gold flaking or not, but when I got that horn back from Tom, it had a really rich dark sound, very close to my Martin Committee. It is the darkness in tonal quality of my Olds horns, that puts this horn as my favorite.
My Recordings are my second favorite, with a level of darkness I appreciate in a horn but not as dark as the Ambassador. While both Recordings to me sound the same, I usually choose the LA over the Fullerton as the rose flowered engraving is larger on the LA model and looks cooler when playing out.
The Super Recording is an amazing instrument in such a different way. It does play much brighter so works well as a lead horn. It also glides more easily into the upper range with much less resistance than both the Recordings. With that said, the Ambassador has nearly identical resistance in the high range as the Super Recording.

@Andrew-Stark Welcome to TrumpetBoards!
I've played and owned more than a few trumpets, and I'm cured of N+1, so my #1 instrument is my 1962 Olds Studio, which is not only my favorite Olds, but my favorite trumpet, period.

@J-Jericho I had a Studio once, and loved it; but then, Votruba's of Vienna told me they had a Recording sitting there, unsold for man months because no one liked the Balanced style; and so I got it for a mere song (less than € 500): A 1954 LA Recording, almost unplayed, with almost virgin valves... now my main axe. I consequentl sold the Studio and was able to afford a Courtois Balanced as well... just out of the sale proceedings of the Studio...

I have two right now - an Ed/D Ambassador trumpet and an L-12 flugelhorn. I’ve owned two Ambassador Bb trumpets and one Ambassador cornet in the past, and none of them really impressed me. The only reason I kept the Eb/D Ambassador and the L-12 flugelhorn is that although I rarely have the need for either, it’s nice to have them available when the opportunity arises that I do need one. I don’t have much money tied up in either one, so I’m happy to let them sit in the closet most of the time.
