    • RE: Selmer Trumpet Bell Tapers?

Could not find my old measurements, I have measured 4 Selmers, diameter of inside of bell and distance from bell mouth. Regards, Stuart.Untitled 1-page-1.jpeg

      all

Some years ago I measured the tapers of my Selmer Bells using different sized washers mounted on a rod and measuring how far they went in.

I measured with three sizes and recorded the results, if I can find them they may be of interest to you.

      1946 Grand Prix, 1950s Balanced, 1975 B700L, 2000 Concept TT, Ferron-Selmer C, Radial Bb, Radial 99C.

      Regards, Stuart.

    • RE: Introductory Teaching - 5th Grade

@fels For teaching a beginner I suggest you watch on youtube Mr Bill's Trumpet First lesson. This is the best instruction I have seen.

I do not encourage lip or mouthpiece buzzing as I feel this introduces excessive chop tension. Feel free to chat if you would like to discuss further,

      Regards, Stuart.

    • RE: Olds Special or alternative advice

Centex Brass has a number of Olds models for sale, I have bought several horns from Clay and have not been disapointed.

    • RE: >OLDS Recording...

@barliman2001. I also have a liking for the older horns, for Orchestra I us.e my Selmer Radials, Bb, C, D and Eb. For Bigband, Selmer B700L that my mother gave me for my 50th birthday in 1988. Another favorite is a Buffet Crampon Balanced made by Ernst Modl. I have not played many modern horns, I did like a Kuhnl and Hoyer, don't remember what model. My Favorite that eclipses all others is my Jerome Wiss 6/20, an absolute amazing horn that I have had for 12months. This is the last horn I will purchase. Regards, Stuart.

For the last 30 years I have played my Selmer Radial C 99 in Church and Orchestra, never had any complaints about sound or blending. I use 4 Selmsr Radials for orchestra, Bb. C, D and Eb..

    • RE: Body Mapping for Trumpet Players

Due to Dupuytrens contracture of both my pinkies I am unable to use a hook, (thanks to the Vikings settling in northern England). I ordered my Jerome Wiss 6/20 without hook.

The downside is the bell shape precludes the use of standard mutes.

      Regards, Stuart.

    • RE: Olds Recording 1951 era plays flat.

@mike-ansberry Can you check the slide lengths against another?, perhaps it was a special built in low pitch A=439.

I would have no hesitation in cutting to bring up to pitch.

The strangest one I have had was a Chinese C trumpet, the open notes were fine, any valved notes flat, turned out to have a Bb valve block and slides.

If it is of any help I can measure my 55 Recording when I get back home at the weekend.

      Regards, Stuart.

    • RE: Chemical Cleaning

@trumpetlearner For my home cleaning I use a dilute CLR, one liter bottle in about 15 liters of water, this does a pretty good job, for heavy corrosion several soakings may be needed with a brushing between each. I usually immerse for about 1/2 hour, although I have inadvertantly left slides in overnight with seemingly no effect. White vinegar is also good, used straight, I once did a test by immersing one leg of a slide in a glass of white vinegar and left it for 24 nours, other a slight green tinge of the vinegar and the leg coming out clean I could not detect any other change.. I asked a repair man that I have a very good relations with what he used, he used a mixture of Phosphoric and Citric acids he could not tell me the concentration, just added to water till he thought it was enough. Regards, Stuart.

    • RE: KGU Brass Mod Kits & Boosters

@bobmiller1969 They are made from plastic, I believe 3D printed, They fit between the valve casing and can be moved up or down to find the best position that gives the best effect, I find that at the top just under the caps for me. Ivan's website may have more information. www,jaegerbrass.com Regards, Stuart.

    • RE: KGU Brass Mod Kits & Boosters

Thanks Bob, I have not had much experience with heavy caps, my Eclipse and Selmer Concept TT both came with light and heavy caps, on the Eclipse they did nothing, the Selmer dampened the higher harmonics to the extent it felt dull to me. I have a Taylor Magnum Max at 4lbs a very heavy horn that came with a Harrelson kit, fitting the original caps and buttons the response and sound is more to my liking. The best after market device I have found is Ivan's (Trumpetplus) "Resonance Enhancers" . I have fitted them to my Radials and my iteration of them to my other trumpets, in every case they have made a significant improvement. Regards, Stuart.

    • RE: KGU Brass Mod Kits & Boosters

What changes has these mods made to the Radial in the playability and sound? I have 4 Radials, Bb, C, D and Eb which are my go to horns for Orchestra, they are great the way they are and do not want any "improvments". Regards, Stuart. (sometime Devil's Advocate)

    • RE: keeping your first Trumpet

My first trumpet was a Bundy purchased cheaply from a music store closing down, sold to a student after my mother gave me a Henri Selmer B700L for my 50th birthday, I will never sell that one. Regards, Stuart

    • RE: 1875 Besson Cornet mystery

Out of interest I have checked the valve numbering on 4 of my older European trumpets. Selmer Grand Prix sn 53xx 79-80-81, Selmer Balanced sn 153xx 82-83-84, I very much doubt they are from the same batch as the instruments are 10,000 apart. Boosey Cornet 1906 13-14-15. National Musical Supply Co Ltd sn 1 ,193-194-195. Unable to find anything about this company, obviously an European made stencil.ards, Stuart.

    • RE: 1875 Besson Cornet mystery

@matt-ward Re Valve numbering, it was European practice to make valve sets in batches of 33, the valves and casings numbered 1 to 99, although I have seen one trumpet with the valves numbered in the 150s. Regards, Stuart.

    • RE: Is WWBW on the ropes?

These problems are symptomatic of a store/chain in trouble, I believe WWBW is part of the Guitar Center group which I heard has filed for bancrupcy.

We has a chain of music stores close here in Australia, I had ordered a Manhassat stand from them, it was not in stock and they would order it in for me. Over the next couple of months i would ask about the stand and would be assured it was on order, I finally asked the sales person would they phone the importer and ask when they would be getting them,
she came back and said I could pick it up tomorrow.
      Nuff Sed.

      Regards, Stuart.

    • RE: Favorite Music

That version of The Band played Waltzing Matilda is the most moving I have heard, growing up in country Australia I knew several WW1 returned men, it was very hard to get them to talk about the war, they chose to try to forget what they went through.

One did tell me that he had been a prisoner of the Germans, they were treated well and when the war ended the guards opened the gates and left, they were frightened to leave thinking it might be a trap.

I think that war touched all of my generation in some way, my wife's aunt was due to get married to a theological student when he was conscripted into the army as a stretcher bearer, he was killed on the western front 6th November 1918 5 days before the war ended.

      Regards, Stuart.

    • RE: How Does The Theory You've Learned Apply To Improvising?

Certainly agree with you George, I was taken to task when I did not like the Thad Jones solo in April in Paris, starts with Pop goes the Weasel and ends with a series of seemingly unrelated high notes.

Perhaps it is age related, coming up 83.

      Regards, Stuart.
