RE: Artist on BOARD
BoB Ross, to me, didn't give enough continued credit to William Alexander, but that's not to say that he gave none. In the beginning, there was a relationship between Ross and Alexander that not only related to painting technique, but to the materials, itself; cleaning supplies, paint, etc. Check out this documentary.
I've always called Ross a "warmed-over Bill Alexander". Most of Ross' followers probably don't even know who Alexander is.
IMO, Alexander is a much better painter than Ross, but Ross is a better teacher. And in the popularity and accessibility of himself, combined with the simplicity of the style itself, it has made painting relatively painless and satisfying to a large group of people.
Regarding the article itself, much of the initial information could be had by just reading Alexander's
autobiography. As an aside, Ross is an Air Force, not Army veteran.

RE: A little humour
A man with two buckets of fish was leaving Boca Chica Beach, well known for its fishing and was stopped by a game warden.
The warden asked the man, "Do you have a license to catch those fish?"
The man replied to the warden, "No, sir. These are my pet fish."
"Pet fish?!" the warden replied.
"Yes, sir. Every night I take these fish down to this beach and let them swim around for about a half-hour, When I whistle, they all come back, jump back into my buckets, and I take 'em home. We do this every night.""That's a bunch of hooey," said the warden. "Fish can't do that!"
"No, really! says the man. "Here, I'll show you." And he releases the fish in the ocean.
"Well, I've GOT to see this!" the game warden replied. The man and the warden stood and waited. After several minutes, the game warden turned to the man and said, "Well, when are you going to call them back?".
"Call who back?" the man asked.
"The FISH."
"What fish?" -

@barliman2001 Yeah, that was what I found mostly - just Anita Kerr with only generic names for her groups. The Tijuana Brass angle is, well, intriguing. I would have guessed that.... never.
The kind of thing you would find with other generic-named bands in the discount bin.
BTW, Word record was a "Christian" music company from Nashville. (Always wondered why Handel's Messiah wasn't classified as "Christian Music". What was it, Buddhist?)

RE: A little humour
As a rehearsal was ending, Sir Thomas Beecham was giving last minute instructions to his orchestra. Joining in, a guest soloist asked if help was needed getting her piano off the stage. "I don't believe so, Madame", answered Sir Thomas. "I think it will slink off of it's own accord".

RE: A little humour
This isn't a joke but a humorous anecdote.
Benny Goodman was known for being somewhat spaced out and forgetful at times. Doris Day tells of an event in New York.
After a daytime rehearsal, she and Benny grabbed a cab together. They jumped in the cab but sat there quietly while Benny daydreamed, presumably about the previous rehearsal.
After a few moments the cab driver looked back, over his shoulder and said, ""Well?", to which Benny jumped out of the cab and proceeded to pay his fare.

RE: Artist on BOARD
Are you like Bob Ross, no living beings except for maybe a V-shaped bird in the distance?
Another nice painting, BTW. -
RE: Anyone Know Who Played This?
Yes. I don't necessarily mean Anita, herself, but her style. Imprecise wording.

Anita Kerr and the Tijuana Brass? Weird. I'd sure like to hear that!

Well, in one orchestra we had a Red Cross worker, and at every dress rehearsal, the Red Cross provided up to seven hundred woollen blankets to simulate the audience... they usually declared this an "emergency exercise".
Now THAT is thinking ahead!
I would call it overthinking.

RE: Acoustics... and a bit more
@ barliman - I've read several of your posts where you write, "orchestra". In the U.S. that means a large ensemble with strings (ELO withstanding). When I worked in Germany, the term orchestra was used for any large instrumental group, with or without strings. Which do you mean? Thanks.

Just as I was getting a little bored with the redundancy, the kicker came. Clever.
BTW, Terri Garr is to die for.

It's a sad story of how a cancer can grow. Don't hope for the best and ignore the warning signs and follow up as effectively as you can.

RE: WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BECOME AN EXPERT?
@Rapier232 said in WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BECOME AN EXPERT?:
Well, for what itβs worth, I was a National Police Firearms Instructor for 20 years. I taught people with absolutely no experience whatsoever from basic level all the way to very advanced close protection and hostage rescue teams. I found some people, including me, were absolute naturals at all shooting disciplines. Others found the skills difficult and some found them impossible and failed to reach the necessary standards required. So Iβd disagree, natural talent/ability does exist, and those with it will out perform those without.
That's funny. I recalled that, as an enlisted man who had never held a firearm in my life, I scored an A.F. Rifle Marksmanship Medal the first time out and, years later, after never having ever shot a handgun, I also earned a Side-Arm Marksmanship Medal. Likewise in your experience, while I was shooting there were others that just sucked at firearms no matter how hard and how often they tried.

RE: How many of you taught yourself to play?
Another after thought is that there can be of some valuable networking from whom you take lessons. I wouldn't let that be my main reason for choosing a teacher but it can be a spin off.
For example, through my H.S. and college trumpet teacher, I got recommended to play in the Royal Hawaiian Band. Through my first alto sax teacher, a reference to one of the best composers in Japan. Through another sax teacher, I got picked to play Lead Alto and then Solo Tenor in one of the workingist jazz bands in the region, and from my composition teacher a reference to one of the best composition jobs in the country.
In each case, it paid off financially and professionally. But that's not why I picked any of them.
