So a total of 21 years off, if I read correctly?

      I don't know.
      3 years soley as a composer/arranger.
16 years soley as a conductor.

But there were almost another 20 years when I conducted and played, but those were woodwinds, not trumpet. I was laying off trumpet but I never laid off music.

Another 2 years that I didn't play or conduct anything, due to strokes. I get it all confused at times. I think this is accurate.

@Dale-Proctor said in Vernacular (of range):

Well, I’d call the E and F at the bottom of the staff low E and F, since there are none lower on the trumpet (at least naturally). That would make the E and F at the top of the staff middle E and F. From there upward, the notes would be high F#, G, A, B, C, D, E, and F, with the doubles beginning with F# again. Maybe that’s arbitrary, but there’s a bit of logic to it.

That's true, but when you ask for a "Middle F", you're likely to get empty stares. "Do you mean the First space F or the Top of the Staff F?"

There are different ways of saying this, so I've found out that you just have to come to an understanding with the other musicians, ahead of time, what you all mean. In other words, right or wrong, a common vocabulary.

Is this Covid related? Very young!

In the article I linked, it said he had Multiple Myeloma.

First off, I'm sorry for your "challenges". Just remember that old saying, "When one door closes, another one . . slams shut." 😀

No, really, I wish you patience and good luck, sincerely.

To answer your question, with an exception here or there, there were three big chunks of time when I didn't, for the most part, play trumpet. When I worked, solely, as a composer/arranger - for about three years. When I was a conductor - about 16 years. And about two years when I had multiple strokes.

To add to that, I played woodwinds about 20 years while I also conducted. So, played but not trumpet.

No offense intended, but I've answered this ad naseum. Be that as it may . .

I relate notes to the lowest playable note and then octaves of it. It follows this logical pattern:

      Low
      Middle
      High
      Double High
then pray that anything comes out.

      or:
      Low F# (below the staff).
      Middle F# (in the staff)
High F# (top line of the staff)
Double High F# (an octave above that)

      But . .
I got tired of taking up time in rehearsals so I have found it quicker to just say:
      F# below the staff
      F# in the staff
F# at the top of the staff
      #F# above High C

Are you calling High D the third-line in the staff D or D above High C?

About the ABRSM materials, I've been using them since I first discovered them on a trip to England back in the 80s. Nicely organized set of evolutionary materials.

    • RE: Getting straight what I can and cannot do

Well, it's kind of a simplistic answer but I just balance the volume in the whole ensemble and fit the trumpets in in the proper musical context.

When I was a younger conductor, I was describing what I wanted from the trumpets in a particular passage. After a mind-imaging description of what I wanted, using flowery words and a beautiful description, a trumpet player raised his hand and asked bluntly, "You mean you want us to play louder"? LOL

From then on, I just conducted the music and let the mechanics be handled by the various musicians, unless they needed some help - and they did but I just asked in very direct ways.

I mean, for the level of ensemble we play in or direct here, if it's good, the musicians take care of a lot of it, themselves. When they need help, I give it.

Steve, as I understand it, you have to record the parts separately, then mix them together
      to coordinate all the parts.

For some reason, my edit shows up in the editing preview block but doesn' show up on my post. Therefore . .

For Quincy Troupe in his biography of Miles, he said:
"Mr. Buchanan stopped the band and told me, "Look here, Miles. Don't come around here with that Harry James stuff, playing with all that vibrato. Stop shaking all those notes and trembling them, because you gonna be shaking enough when you get old. Play straight, develop your own style, because you can do it. You got enough talent to be your own trumpet man."
