@Tobylou8 said in Newby - Need help identifying a Conn Trumpet:

I am not aware of any Conn trumpet or cornet from that era having a copper leadpipe. There were some copper casings on the 24B and 25B Opera Grand model but Coprion didn't make it's way to the lineup until the late '30s. I'm a sucker for copper and would love to see a picture or two or three!!! It could be someone switched it to copper to darken the tone a bit.
Here's a link to the Conn Loyalist website. It is the best resource for all things Conn that I've found. https://cderksen.home.xs4all.nl/ConnLooksTrumpet.html

Below are a 10B with copper lead pipe and bell, and a 6B late model with copper lead pipe only. These are the only vintage Conns with copper leadpipes that I'm aware of. PICS PICS PICS!!!! 😁 😁 😁

That first horn looks like a 38B, except for the copper. Is it? And if so, what are the playing differences. Thanks.

@Sound-Advice - I don't understand why you continued with any system for several decades when it wasn't paying off for you. What was the call of that one system that was so compelling when there's a myriad of other systems out there that may have given you more immediate results? Thanks.

    • RE: Question on Caruso 6 notes

Julie Landsman says the Six-Note-Exercise is the first exercise she plays in the day. Landsman was a student of Caruso, is the Principal horn player with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra for the last 25 years, and teaches at Juilliard. You don't get any better than she.

BTW, don't forget to count in tempo.

Is a psychologist a Dr. in the USA?

Franklin, the difference is that the Psychologist is an academic degree and a Psychiatrist is a medical degree. They both use the term doctor.

The doctors can correct me if that's incorrect.

Thanks. Well, I've easily got 10,000 hours of music-making time and I still suck.

Let's see. The thread topic is Hello! Welcome to TB, who are you? and, on a long page full of posts, not one (including myself) dealing with welcoming new members.

My read of the introductory post is it's not just about new members but also about seasoned members as well. Please read the first post closely.

I did read the post. My point is not about who can share background info. It is about a whole page of superfluous comments. Sometimes it's a matter of knowing how much is too much and showing some restraint.

    • Conn 80-A Cornet

I have a Conn 80-A I'm planning to sell on eBay. It's in excellent condition, mechanically and cosmetically. Just hit me that someone here might be interested, so before I put it up for public sale, I'd give TB Forum members a chance, if anyone's interested.

98% lac. (relacquered)., valves work well with no discoloration. All slides work. I don't see any dings or dents.

      Case and mouthpiece included.

Planning on asking $350.00, will sell for 300.00.
      If you're interested, pm me.

    • RE: Lifetime quest finally paying off!

I just have three short comments:

      1. Who cares? So much of the substantial arguments are, to me, a waste of time. Extended micro-analysis. I guess medical doctors and engineers and the like, like this stuff. To me it sometimes raises to "the finger pointing at the moon and not the moon, itself. That's just me.

      2. Some of the issues Sound Advice brings up have content that, in and of itself, are decent topics for discussion disregarding himself but getting some info from others on a topic he raises. What others say on a topic, and not necessarily Sound Advice, may be useful advice.

      3. Leave Franklin alone. To me he's irascible and has some rough edges. But he also represents an individual voice that acts as a counter-balance to some others.

    • Diversions

I didn't find a category that this fits in, so this is as good a one as any. This was posted elsewhere, and I had a request from a credible poster to post it here. I don't know the motive and I certainly don't have one so just take it-or not- for what it is. To wit:

I'm thinking out loud and any one can jump in with thoughts on this topic. Which is: seeking perfect trumpet methods and exercises vs. practicing just about anything. A short anecdote to illustrate.

When I lived in S. Calif., I went looking for a Martial Arts studio convenient to me. I already was a 4th degree blackbelt and had trained in a variety of styles so, to an extent, it didn't really matter what style I trained with. I went to a studio a few minutes down the street from my house. I saw some things they were teaching that I strongly disagreed with, so I decided not to work out with them. But the result was, I seldom worked out regularly with anyone and my skill suffered.

In retrospect, it would've been better to have done something instead of nothing. Isn't that what some of us are doing regarding finding this perfect system or that perfect exercise, this Goldilocks mouthpiece or that Goldilocks horn?

Wouldn't it be better to just pick a system/exercises/horn/mpc. and hit the shed? Do we divert too much time and energy on extraneous things, resulting in too much of nothing instead of a lot of something?

    • RE: Forced Layoff

I've traveled all over the world as a musician. There are parking garages and there are storage rooms where you can play, open horn. Maybe even ballrooms etc. which are vacant.

Silent Brass is a gas. I am currently using a Best Brass which is very quiet but doesn't provide the kind of feedback Silent Brass provides.

Those other devices only go so far before they get gimmickey. Play open-horn as much as possible.

Fair enough. I will say, though, that whether performing on sax or trumpet, I was never conscious of my support being different.
