That is so damn interesting. The information here tells me just how poor my knowledge of music theory really is. I also now appreciate some of the more complicated pieces we do at the band that have different key changes within the composition. Thanks, Dr.Mark.

RE: Community Bands
@Kehaulani
Yeah, there is definitely a need for the New Horizons type program, especially for seniors who, like me were serious players in their youth but gave it up for different circumstances, then in their twilight years want to play again.
My reasons for moving on were somewhat like yours, Kehaulani. I thrive on playing where there is an audience and the local Horizons here only did two concerts a year. Also, the material was not challenging enough. -
RE: Community Bands
I currently play 1st ( but not lead ) trumpet with an amateur Brass Band that I feel is one of the best in the province. The band gets paid for some gigs but the players are recreational in nature and any money the band earns means we don't have to pay dues very often to keep the band viable. We are busiest during the summer and fall up to Christmas, probably averaging two to three gigs a month and sometimes weekly when doing nursing home tours. We add and learn new material during the slower months ( January to March ). A great bunch of guys and gals with the average age of about 58. The other trumpet player who plays lead first trumpet is great and I love playing beside someone who is better than me.

RE: Fall Concert
Horizons have a great international program and I spent my first two years of my comeback playing with a local Horizons Band. It was exactly what I needed at the time, but switched to a more challenging band in my 3rd year back. Unfortunately the local Horizons chapter quit operations this fall due to poor attendance. Like me, many need a bigger challenge and want to play more than the two concerts a year the local chapter offered.

Tuba Skinny area really great. I've been watching their stuff on you tube for sometime now.

RE: Reasons to collect trumpets?
I am not a collector. The horns I own get regular use at various functions.

Kehaulani,
I think TJ misunderstood your post and thought you were talking about a piece of gear. -

This video will be an eye-opener for those that don't know that air is NOT needed to make a sound on a brass instrument.
And what do you suggest excites, and keeps in motion, the lips?
I would ask the same question, Dr-Mark .

RE: 557 Jazz Standards
The book arrived the day after I requested it. I already found three pieces of music I was looking for and I haven't had chance to go through it all. I like that it is available in concert and Bb. Fantastic collection, too.

@tmd
I didn't have any trouble accessing the site. I'm sending Bob a request for his Fake Book. -
RE: 557 Jazz Standards
It's a great book with many of the songs I grew up listening to and these are now part of my sheet music collection. I found this on the internet quite some time ago just after I started playing again in 2016.

RE: Trumpet Playing Peeves
Players yapping or playing while the conductor is trying to explain something the rest of us want to hear. Doesn't happen a lot but annoying as hell when it does.

RE: And who is the new moderator?
Wow, you certainly had, and still are, living an interesting life. You'll make an excellent moderator.

RE: Playing Like A Girl
@Dr-Mark
I never had a daughter, we tried but stopped after 3 boys. Anyway, it upsets me to hear what your daughter is going through. Still I had to laugh at the fact that the bully she punched now wants to be her friend.

RE: Playing Like A Girl
The 2nd trumpet players in our band are both ladies. One is 22 who has been playing since grade 4 and right now she is terrific. The other lady is in her 70s and still struggles, but she has only been playing for less than 2 years and she had the courage to join one of the best ( and toughest ) bands in the area. I support them and help them any way I can.

RE: Playing Like A Girl
@Dr-Mark
Thanks I will read that later when I have time.There were five girls out of twelve students ( including me ) who were enrolled in the trumpet program at the Maritime Conservatory of Music where I studied in 1953, yet in the 12 years I played between '53 and '65 coming across a female player was rare. But there were a couple I got to know through the musicians union that were helluva lot better players than me and a few others like me. But the thing was that these girls were members of an all girl band. Maybe they wanted to play in an all girl band, but there was definitely something wrong if that was the only way they got to play. I never thought much of it back then, but I certainly do now.

Back to another non-commissioned-my-own-choice-of-subject-matter paintings. I was very happy with the results of it.
This is a farm not even 5 miles from my house. That might be a huge surprise for those who share a certain opinion about New Jersey!Love this one, Wayne. Looking at it I felt the need to put my sweater on. And again, I am wondering what is over the crest of the hill ?
