He lost me in a few places but I love how Wynton presented the information. There is a lot more to playing the blues than I ever thought. Thanks for that, J.Jericho.

RE: Band Re-start for Fall
I certainly couldn't wear that thing and play trumpet.
Where I live things are looking up. With a high population vaccination rate we are able play in any outdoor surrounding without masks or coverings for the bells of our instruments. Indoor playing is still a case of maintaining a 6 ft distance from each other and coverings for the bells of the instruments. We expect all restrictions to be lifted in early September, after which we will be doing concerts again.
We practice every Wednesday evening in an outdoor bandshell situated by a river on a walking trail and have attracted a regular audience. I like that.

Good news. There was a post from kehaulani last night at TH. I hope he comes back here, too. I replied to his post but haven't heard back from him as yet.

In this case, Dr. Mark.... You need more practice!
You sure got that right. Heck, I was with her just last night and she leaned over and said, "kiss me where it stinks" so I took her to Tampa. Man was she pissed. I'm still trying to figure out what I did wrong!
You two doctors are a riot.
In reading JorgePD's post his comeback after 40 years and not being able to play an A above the staff after a year, I realized I must have done the right thing in my comeback after 50 years.
What I did was learn to play the trumpet all over again, using the trumpet tutorial book my teacher recommended back in 1953: The Everette James Trumpet/Cornet Tutorial. Yep, Everette is Harry's dad. The book is a little tattered today but it did the job for me back then and did the job for me again in 2016. I don't recall exactly how long it took me to get to a daily high C but I do know it wasn't much more than 3 months. The tutorial triggered the memories of what I had learned about technique, style and the rest of that stuff, and all the exercises and etudes, got me on the right track. I started my comeback in March of 2016 and was playing with the local Seniors Horizons band by September when they started their Fall/ winter term. The second year back I took a few lessons with a local teacher who helped me find the correct mouthpiece because that was my biggest problem. I was probably lucky in getting started again on my own, but there did come that time when professional help was needed. So I am glad to hear that JorgePD got that pro help he needed.

RE: Famous Signature Songs
In the US the Prado version was released in 1955 before Calvert's, and featured Billy Regis on trumpet. It went to number one on the US Billboard chart . A couple of months later in the United Kingdom, Calvert released his version and it went to the top of the charts there for something like four or five months. I actually liked both versions but I had already bought the Prado record by then.

RE: Artist on BOARD
That was kind of you to do that, Wayne. When you lose a pet it is like losing a member of the family. Your portrait will ensure this furry little member of the family will be remembered forever.
And the work you did is excellent as usual.

RE: Lifetime quest finally paying off!
@Dr-GO
Thanks, Doc. Rest assured the respect is mutual. Like Dr. Mark said, we're all a little testy due this quarantine business. Right now I just rather play some music and see what my critic ( ME ) has to say. Trouble with ME is he never seems to be satisfied with my playing... -

Although I wouldn't go so far as to call Ray Anthony a musical prostitute, rather I would label him more of a musical entertainer who did a good job of keeping the big band sound alive during a period when the younger generation's taste was leaning toward hard core rock and roll.
I know he sounds like Harry James but he wasn't the only one copying Harry's style.
I own a lot of his records and enjoy listening to them often. -
RE: Why not another thread about bigger horns ?
I don't play anything shown so far in this thread, but it is sure interesting to look at the instruments and read about them.
I tried trombone for awhile in my teens, but using the larger mp affected my trumpet embouchure so I sold the trombone. -

Wow ! I can almost hear the roar of the water. Great work, Wayne.

@smoothoperator
Yeah, a lot of people thought Perez Prado was a trumpet player when actually he played piano and was more an arranger and band leader. I am 84 so I am familiar with a lot of trumpet players in that era and I really knew very little about the fellow playing Cherry Pink. But he was damn good on that piece anyway. -

I'd love to have a coffee with you two and listen to the banter between you. It would be a riot...

RE: Outstanding performance!
In 1974 I was 38 years old, a mere child...ha ha. But you know, I do remember that show. I rarely missed a Tonight Show and that was mainly because of my love of the Doc Severinsen Orchestra. And I tell you, Snookie Young was pretty damn cool on the trumpet, too. The whole orchestra was fantastic every night.

RE: YouTube Suggestion
Wowie ! A killer arrangement of one of my favorite ballads. Louis nails it , as usual, and so does the young man playing beside him. Love that orchestra. Thanks for the vid, my friend.

Jerry Lewis plays trumpet ?
Well, apparently so, though the quality of his play is questionable, but he does get to play with Harry James in this video from The Jerry Lewis TV Show on December 10, 1958. Pretty funny when Jerry challenges Harry on directing bands. Nice to see and hear, Harry having fun...

But be careful not to drink too much. I once did a water color after consuming several ounces of Jack Daniels and well...what a royal mess....
