I like analyzing a transcription the old fashioned way, on paper. I use iRealpro, though, and record myself often when I’m practicing changes. One of my college trumpet professors got me in the habit of transcribing myself when I played something I liked, and I still do that through the recordings. It not only helps me stay honest and grow as a player, but also lets me keep and own all the stuff I do that is more unique to me. It also keeps me from becoming a little too stagnant and boring.

RE: Increase high range by 4 notes in 6 weeks?
Range building should be a long term goal, not a short term goal. Musical Directors can hope all they want, but you can only build what you can build, and we’re all different. Don’t hurt yourself to force out some unreliable pitches that aren’t part of your regular daily ability. Build what you can and find a musical way around the rest - your audience will thank you, and so will your chops!

RE: B&S Trumpets
Great horns - we just got a bunch in. I wouldn’t really call them Strad clones as they have their own playing characteristics. I’m rather fond of the Challenger II models we have - excellent all-around horns that would work in about any situation.

RE: Buy your horns here, not there!
We just got a huge shipment of new B&S, Schertzer, Besson and Meinl Weston Brass - awesome stuff! Most has listed now, and we’ve already sold a few.

RE: Buy your horns here, not there!
I’m surprised my workplace hasn’t showed up on this list, but we offer a 30 day return on most stuff, and have some great horns come through the shop! Ever have questions about any specific horn I’m happy to answer them - I go through all the brass personally!

RE: Student trumpets
I’ve been very impressed by the Jupiter intermediates we have at work. They are more like a stripped down version of the XO than a dressed up student model, like a lot of others. Prices are great and I could gig on one no problem! I still prefer my Adams, of course, but our rep says there are a bunch of Jupiter artists playing them alongside the XO, and I’m not surprised. They also compare very favorably in price to a lot of the student models, so they have sold very well.

Might be a mobile thing. I’m only using iPad/iPhone

RE: Cannot upload pictures.
I was able to upload by changing size to square, but not anymore. My pics don’t upload no matter what I resize them to. Posting from iPad - any tricks that might help?

RE: Eb Trumpet Question
Well, an Eb trumpet is not an Eb cornet. They sound and blend differently, and both are difficult to play. They take a lot of practice for sound and intonation, which also means getting used to the group you’re playing with and their intonation challenges. As far as horns go, some BBB players I know are playing quite well on Yamaha Eb cornets. We had one in at work recently that I play tested, and it was quite nice. That may be a way to go if you’re going to continue on Eb cornet. If not, work with what you’ve got.

Holy crap - i’m Dying inside! My husband is just listening to this train wreck and laughing, while I freak out!!

RE: Schilke Club?
@administrator nope, just the standard model. I still like it more than any other picc I’ve played, though! And nothing about a picc is ever of the smoky night club sound

RE: Schilke Club?
I’ve been playing my P5-4 for 20 yrs, the only horn I have kept for that long. I also play a 1971 C5L I picked up in a trade from a friend a few years ago. I used to play Schilke Bbs, but that was about 12 yrs and 3 horns ago....

RE: Vintage Bach Club
@J-Jericho we are definitely of the opposite opinion about tattoos. I have found the many that I’ve performed in to be painfully terrible experiences. Hours on my feet in horribly long rehearsals with conductors that treat you like the dumbest of high school kids, along with pipers and drum lines who never stop playing, even during hours long breaks - I can live without all that. I also despised every minute of marching drills. After my last year marching the Virginia International Tattoo, my knees were so swollen I could barely bend them and my chops were bruised from tripping because of my knees - fun times I’d love to forget!!

RE: Vintage Bach Club
Funny how no one is shaming fat old men in speedos.......
Really, though - what’s the problem with old ladies with tattoos? I intend to be one eventually, and feel zero shame about it. -
RE: Kelly mouthpieces (plastic, acrylic, lexan, whatever...)
@ButchA they are great for parades - it’s exactly what they’re meant for, and sizes run pretty true so they’re comfortable and easy to play. I used one for quite a while in the Navy in extreme cold weather playing and marching. I eventually switched over to an ACB acrylic top on brass backbore that matched my usual mpcs, and they do project better, but you will be just fine on a Kelly. I spoke to the folks that make them at NAMM this year - super nice people, making a product they use themselves. I’ve gifted them to friends and students - one friend’s little kids had all but destroyed her favorite mouthpiece and she was about to start playing in a community band again. I got her one in purple, and no matter how many times her kids got it, there wasn’t a scratch on it!
