Yes, it has been 100+ around here and my motivation seems to be inversely proportional to the temperature as of late.

RE: We're off to a good start
@bhornFree Pre-banning? Strange stuff. I'm not sure about that, but I don't care much for the format. I'm having a hard time getting this website onto Google, which can contribute to the slow growth.

RE: Lifelong musician, beginning trumpeter
Welcome. I think you'll find it a fulfilling journey. Trumpet is an easy instrument to play, incredibly difficult to master. A private teacher will definitely help you, but once you get to the point where you can make some decent sounds it gets to be very fun and exciting.

RE: What are you listening to?
Same tune...very different setting. Very beautiful! Definitely my favorite anthem. It's a very moving piece of music, regardless of the lyrics.

RE: Is It Jazz or Is It Classical?
Now, I would pay good money to hear J.S. Bach improvise!

RE: Lip Buzzing-Bad
I just see the lips and mouthpiece as one system -- you can't separate them, just like you can't separate the mouthpiece from the reed on a saxophone.

RE: Cannot upload pictures.
Maybe I need to fix something. I'll look into it.

RE: What are you listening to?
@dr-go said in What are you listening to?:
A medical student I was teaching just found were he matched for residency training. He was so excited but saddened that he would be leaving the Dayton area he wanted to share a memory with me from a few years back
After he finished a course I was teaching on lipid metabolism during his first year of medical school, at the end of a semester. he wanted to get back to focusing less on medicine and more on music. So he invited me over to his home and we recorded an iTunes song performed by his sister, with him putting down drum, guitar and keyboard tracks, and me on Flugelhorn.
After that session, he wanted to do a version of "Fly Me to the Moon", no music in front of us and here is what we did, unrehearsed and in one take:
Youtube VideoI really enjoy your playing, Dr. What is that Flugelhorn you are on? I know your trumpet is a Harrelson, I do remember that.

RE: Symphonic Recording of the Week
Wow, I am utterly speechless. What a beautiful performance.

RE: A little humour
What's fun is actually giving an honest answer to that question.

RE: ITG Conference Update
@Kehaulani said in ITG Conference Update:
I can understand the financial precariousness of cancelling this, but it has to be kept in mind that this is not only a conference with, perhaps limited enough of an attendance to justify its still going on, but it should be kept in mind that they have to get there. That means, for many, the use of cramped public transportation and airlines, and that puts the conference in a totally different perspective.
Remember, the conference is at the end of May. This could all blow over before then.

RE: Bugles Across America
Thank you for serving. I recently had the opportunity to go to my grandfather's funeral. He was definitely an American patriot and served in the National Guard of Missouri. I very much love and miss this man. When we arrived at the graveside to inter his body, there was a local veterans unit there to give him the gun salute (I don't know exactly how many shots were fired.) One man had a fake bugle, and it was my privilege to tell him that his services were not necessary, since I would be performing taps on a real bugle. That was a great experience.

RE: Is there such a thing as a “natural player”?
Don’t be ashamed, “politicians” are an essential part of a functioning democracy. I was speaking with my sister one day about how well and efficient the USA government runs, especially in comparison to other gov’ts around the world. Naturally, given our present state of affairs, she was a little bewildered.
I pointed out the fact that in the USA, when you get pulled over by a cop for speeding, he either writes up a citation or lets you go with a warning, but the exchange is usually very short and by-the-book. Then, you have the opportunity to fight the ticket or pay it. The court date of your opportunity is usually written quite expressly on the ticket itself. The entire exchange is done in a known, predictable manner. There are always exceptions, but this is the norm.
In other countries, you can be stopped by police for any reason at any time, who can then search your vehicle and personal belongings (and those of your passenger) for any reason at any time. Many countries have no “4th” or “5th” amendments. Other places treat laws more as suggestions.
You could be jailed for no reason at all, without a court date or even a judicial review. Yes, I know this happens in the USA, but the fact that you hear about it in the news is, in itself, an indication that it’s the exception and not the norm. We get upset because we assume that “can’t happen in the USA.” I remember watching a documentary about men in Haiti who were arrested on spurious or no charges, thrown in dingy pits and then 5 years later were still awaiting any news at all about their case. This seemed to be the norm, according to the documentary, that almost nobody in Haiti was surprised or even concerned by it.
Anyway, that’s just my rant. Cynicism is a corrosive cancer.

RE: Symphonic Recording of the Week
The BRSO (Munich) plays "Wiener Philharmoniker Fanfare". Conducted by Christian Thielemann. I have to confess that Thielemann is one of my favorite modern conductors when it comes to brass. I have heard several of his recordings and the brass is just spot on in each recording. He reminds me of Solti in that regard.

RE: A little humour
I don't know I just think that giving the response of "I'm feeling suicidal today," to the cashier's question "How are you?" Just doesn't seem quite right.

RE: King Liberty
I'm trying. Still hard to find us on Google. I mean, the site is breaking even now, so I'm not planning on killing it any time soon.
