Love it, but what am I supposed to see? One thing could be the strange reed instrument sitting propped on a stand, looks like a cross between a bass flute and a sax?

As eloquently phrased as that was, we still are impatiently waiting for the real truth of the matter...
No rush, though, Tobylou. We will sit here holding our breath till you answer.

I see an oddball woodwind instrument with no taper after the mouthpiece. Haven't found anything quite like it in my search.

In addition to the Bass Clarinet I see 2 trumpets with tuners on them.

And I am not so sure this is a good thing... Perhaps just perhaps in a recording studio, but not in real time performance.

Why? It is a section leaders responsibility to be in tune with the ensemble, not necessarily the perfect pitch. I have played in many an ensemble when the leader (bassist) insists on tuning to them. Tonight, I play in a big band rehearsal at the University of Dayton's piano is a quarter tone flat where I have to put the tuning slide out about an eighth of an inch from the perfect pitch. I have a tuning app on my phone, but I tune to the piano, not the app, and I expect my entire section to tune with me (which they do).

They were probably playing a couple cheap Chinese trumpets that wouldn't play in tune...lol

Sometimes we are forced to play in tempered harmonies and melodies. This is especially true with multi-tracking. That is the only time I'd use a tuner on the fly.

I feel that great players like that would be hampered by a tuner, unless it corrects the pitch somehow electronically. Watching or relying on a tuner when you’ve already got a trained ear seems like a Tour de France racer using training wheels to keep him/her upright

Ummm.... Tobylou, they are in a recording studio. Read my post carefully. They are playing in this artificial environment of perfect sound with digital instruments on tune. So they use this to stay on tune.

I recorded a session with Kenny Drew Jr on a highly out of tune piano. His virtuosity to work around those off notes and the rest of the ensembles ability to hear and adjust ended up in a fabulous recording. If we had those tuners set to perfect, the recording would never have made it to production.

I've said this before, but I have a friend who is a long-term player with the Philadelphia Orchestra and I asked him, one time, how they play so well in tune with each other?
"We don't play well in tune with each other", he retorted. "We play out of tune with each other, well"
