I'm not usually too impressed with gear topics but I've got to say, this is really nice.

            Kehaulani,
I think TJ misunderstood your post and thought you were talking about a piece of gear.

So who's freshening up the engraving? Is Sherry Huntley still doing small jobs on the side?

She did my Committee quickly and with great finesse.

Thanks. Nothing much to tell, really. I found on eBay what seemed like a closet horn and sent it to Osmun Music to examine and repair anything they might discover, which they did. The horn is a sweety. Plays well.

I own a really nice vintage Committee and I only play it occasionally to keep the moving parts from freezing up. Its great for people that like them but its just not my cup of tea. However, you have to admit, it's a kick ass looking horn but in my opinion not $70,000 worth of kick ass. However, there are people on this site that love old Committees and just might jump at the chance to own this piece of history. Purchase alert! This horn will NOT make you sound like Miles Davis.

Just saw through Monette’s Facebook page that the Miles Davis horn sold for $220,000.00.

Everybody chew on that for a bit.

Okay, I know that the Committee at $70,000 won't help me sound like Miles but a Committee at $220,000? Just maybe!

I can sound like Miles on my $3,000 Committee. But why? I prefer sounding like myself as Claudio taught me intended me to sound.

There's more than tone in replicating someone else's playing. There's phrasing and articulations for starters. I used to think I could channel Cannonball until I put some of his solos in The Amazing Slowdowner and heard a myriad of subtle articulations and attacks which had previously escaped me totally.

Yes. And this is how Claudio taught me. The phrasings and articulations are the voice. Though understanding and reproducing the voice of others you will find your own.

My vocal hero was Joe Henderson. My voice is channeled more through him than any other.

Wow, that sure is true for me. Decades ago I was going through my "John Coltrane Phase" I ate, slept, and whatever else to John Coltrane. I got to the point that I could pretty much play the notes but when I would record myself and (then the painful part) listen back, I was lightyears away from him. I tried and tried and tried. Nope, still didn't sound like a trumpet version of Coltrane. It was then that I gave up trying to sound like someone else and began working on myself. I'm still under construction so if you hear me, be sure to wear a hard hat and goggles.

Yes, I recall your previous Committee that you sold because I reached out to you to see if it was available, but you’d already sold it.

What did Osmun do to your horn? Did they shorten the 3rd valve slide? I read a bit about how they believe that it’s too long which causes intonation issues.

Jim Becker gave it a cleaning, worked on a valve job, and smoothed out a few minor dents. I think he also realigned the bell.

He did not cut down the third valve slide on this or the previous Committee. I've never, personally, read about shortening the third slide for intonational problems. An advantage of the Committee is that one doesn't have to mess with the third slide. If you shorten it, then you would have to use it conventionally.

Slotting on a Committee is intentionally looser than most other horns. I wouldn't mess with the third slide, personally.

I don’t know why it took me over two months to reply to this....but I was obviously confused about the third valve slide. I thought I recalled someone talking about shortening it, but I can’t find that reference anywhere.

My horn remains original except for the reduced gap (to almost zero) that I achieved with a gap shim kit from Harrelson. Now I just play it and love every note.

They definitely take a different approach than a modern horn and with my Miyashiro still being at Yamaha to have the lead pipe replaced the Committee has been my daily horn. Compared to the Yamaha it’s more work, but once you change your approach and learn to be efficient, the rewards are worth far more than the effort. In fact, I blew a few notes on my buddy’s Miyashiro the other day and it felt strange to me.

It will be interesting to see how my Miyashiro blows when it comes back.

I had a slide issue with my Kanstul flugelhorn. I took it to my favorite local instrument tech and he did a machining technique (the inner bore looks tractor like tire tracks) but it works GREAT! AND it can harvest a row of corn!

Interesting-was it sticky? Are you referring to the inner bore of the outer slide or the internal bore? Cutting grooves in it would reduce surface area thus reducing friction.

It is, but that's the beauty if this horn! The work you put into it pays you back in so many pleasurable ways!
