Got the June/July schedule for the band at last night's practice. There are 5 nursing homes in the area and we will be doing a concert at each one of them from June 18th to July 16th.Plus a Gospel gig at a local Baptist Church and two outdoor concerts the last two weeks in July. LOVE IT !

Keeps you off the streets. 😈

Summer jobs can go from the sublime to the barely tolerable. I've done well-attended and relaxing concerts in southern California to 110 degree temperature in a Wenger enclosed, portable stage, in the summer in Palm Springs. The former was always a joy. The later, hell.

In your case, all those jobs are great to have. Good goals (concerts) to aim for. Congrats.

There are 2 pending outdoor concerts in late August. One is pretty certain and that concerns me a bit because we can get awfully hot around here in August.

Very strange indeed as to the busyness. I started last week out with no gigs, ended with 4. This week I am subbing for a big band at a nursing home, tomorrow evening, playing a club this evening, and performing at the Dayton Jazz Festival on Sunday. The Sunday gig was the only one scheduled months in advance.

I have only one currently scheduled for July to date, but that is how June started with only one, and so far has 11 in it!

What is even more remarkable from the June gigs is that a well known drummer from Cincinnati (recorded albums with George Benson and a faculty at the UC College Conservator) that I have NEVER had the pleasure to play with in my 40+ years as an area jazz musician, suddenly had me playing 3 of those gigs with that drummer just this month. Getting in well with well know people in these situations, gets your name out there and opens even more opportunities that fills in those vacancies.

I get what you're saying, Doc. Until last week there was very little scheduled for June and July for us and I've been told there is more coming for August now where we only had two gigs late in the month. Nature of the game, I guess.

They can get to be a challenge. The one I referred to in Palm Springs, most everybody's shirts/blouses were 3/4 soaked through before the first tune was over. Probably the dumbest gig I did along those lines was in a mall parking lot in the middle of summe in L.A. No cover and no audience. They were smarter than to stand on hot asphalt in the blazing sun.

At my age I don't think I could handle that. I'm not so proud that I won't drop out if circumstances dictate. I'd like to live to play another day...☺
