    What is a good mute to use if your practicing high notes and do not want to disturb other family members .Can I use a straight mute or Harmon ?

        Yes to either. The Harmon may have more resistance but this may not be a bad thing. It will take more muscle tension, but again I find this practice an excellent way to build embochure endurance.

          From the standpoint of those around you, the Harmon will be the quieter of the options.

          However if you are looking for the best in practice mutes, I would recommend the Yamaha Silent Mute. I take this one with me when needing to practice in hotel rooms. It has an ear bud option that amplifies the sound in your ear s.

            Thomann had a very excellent "warm-up mute" which was equally silent in all registers. It's discontinued now, but they might have some new old stock...! Here is my Olds Recording with a Brand Turbo mouthpiece and that selfsame mute (which I even used in hospital!)
