RE: Chet on Commitee?
@administrator said in Chet on Commitee?:
I can only handle Chet once in a while. His music depresses me.
That criteria sure eliminates a lot of art.
Regarding his treatment of others, an addict is a star in his own drama and most others are just bit players. Typical, manulative behaviour.
It's an old delimma, seperating the creation from the creator. Some make peace with it, others can't reconcile it. To me, the art exists seperate and I enjoy it as such. YMMV.

RE: So how did you start out to learn the trumpet?
@GeorgeB said in So how did you start out to learn the trumpet?:
I'm in my 80s so the sound of the big bands and jazz from the likes of Satchmo on the radio was a part of my daily life. At the age of 14 or so I saw a movie called Young Man With A Horn. I thought Kirk Douglas, the star of the movie, was a great trumpet player and wanted to be just like him, and later when I learned it was Harry James who was doing all the playing, I was even more determined to be a great trumpet player.
Very interesting. When I was a tween, there was a jazz program that came on the radio at midnight, the "bewitching hour", and I will never forget Satchmo playing St. James Infirmary. It raised the hair on the back of my neck.
Loved Doris Day and Harry James' duets in Young Man With a Horn. Matter of fact, a copy of that film is one of the few I have, still. Kind'a corny in parts, but still an enjoyable trip.

RE: How do you feel about vibrato?
Vibrato also depends greatly on style. It's different if you're playing in an orchestra or jazz combo. On legit sax, I always adhered to the concept hat vibrato is an inherent component of the sound. In pop and jazz, it's more variable.

RE: How do you feel about vibrato?
I don't think one could agree or disagree until one heard you play. Otherwise, it's just hypothetical.
As an aside, I had my vibrato on a jury challenged, too. Fact was, the vibrato didn't come from a premeditated philosophy but because my legs were shaking uncontrollably.

RE: So how did you start out to learn the trumpet?
Notice that first book might have been only 85 cents. I think the Arban was about $5.
I Played out of two half sized books, as well. One just of marches, I think the other was mixed. Both might also been Rubank.
We were lucky in that, just across the parking lot, was an A.F. band and we borrowed a lot of dance band music from them. I still remember playing The Naughty Lady of Shady Lane, LOL.
BTW, trumpet never hurt me with girls. Different environments, maybe.

RE: TrumpetForum.com - UPDATE
So, just so I understand. There is a new forum called Trumpet Forum and it limits itself to gear? And not pedagogy, performers, musical expression and other non-gear topics?

RE: So how did you start out to learn the trumpet?
Wow, I played out of that book, too.
In the seventh grade, I was in Civics one day and the English teacher came in and announced that he was forming a school band and asked who would be interested in playing in it. I sat on my hands. Then he said that whoever played in band got out of P.E. and my hand shot up. I hated P.E..
So, for a couple of weeks, I played Tonette and then qualified for the band. Played section for the first three months and then first until I graduated. I had a cornet that I had not been playing that was a hand-me-down from my cousin. From then on, the music bug bit me and I've been making music ever since. I'm one of those people that can't not make music.

I never heard (nor seen) a . . Trumpetfish or anything like that.
Gee, a reference to trumpet. Who would've known?

RE: Stevie Wonder’s version of Spain
One of my favorite tunes to improvise on. Exciting.
Refreshing to hear a trumpeter in that context who's solo is more than just the proverbial, playing high and loud and wiggling the fingers. Thanks. -
RE: And I thought we were exposed playing the Trumpet
You gotta watch those handbags and shoes!

RE: Brass Quintet Direction
That's interesting, because I never played in, or supervised, a quintet that had external musical directors. That's both academic and professional.

@GeorgeB said in And I thought we were exposed playing the Trumpet:
. . it doesn't appear to have water keys anywhere.
It depends on the horn. Anyway, how much trouble is it to remove and replace a slide?
I personally didn't find the Horn more difficult than the trumpet.
I've said it before, but that includes playing nothing but First Trumpet (except for my first three months) in school and professional playing later as contrasted with playing First Horn in college, horn in a military band and the Tokyo Youth Phil.

RE: Brass Quintet Direction
In my case, it depended on the respective talents of each player. And it wasn't always the 1st Trumpeter who had the final say-so. Sometimes it was other, stronger musicians. It all depended. Situational with no immutable rule or pecking order.

RE: Brass Quintet Direction
In my experience it's usually collective but lot of interpretation is acquested to.

RE: And I thought we were exposed playing the Trumpet
When I was finishing my last year in high school, my trumpet teacher, who was also the band director at the university, told me I would always be a good trumpet player, but I could become a great horn player, and convinced me to switch over during the summer.
I spent my first semester in college playing first horn in the university band but just missed jazz big band too much and told him I wanted to go back to trumpet and he, like the man above, was also livid. He threatened me point blank that I would never graduate as a trumpet player. Kind of lucky because I transferred to North Texas which fit me like a glove.
It came in handy when I joined the A.F. later because there were only two vacancies worldwide for horn and none for trumpet. And the draft was breathing down my neck.
I'll tell you, though, I'd rather play in a woodwind quintet than a brass quintet any day,

It may just be late and I may be a bit fogy, but what was he point of that?
