I was engaged to play a traditional Catholic Mass for Easter 11:00 Service -- Predictable mass parts -- for a prelude -- we are playing a brass quartet arrangement of "Emendemus in melius" by William Byrd (I am trumpet 1) The music director (PhD), after listening to our dress rehearsal, commented " increase the temp and shape the notes". I understand shaping (Chicago Symphony style etc) and I understand Renaissance polyphony -- we need more rehearsals to accomplish the goal -- but will do with the time we have -- namely a warm up.

Along the lines of Sinatra with instrumental (band) is a very hip album, Sinatra and Basie at the Sands (Las Vegas).I may be wrong, but I think some of the songs were arranged by Quincy Jones.
Youtube VideoYou are correct, sir. Not only were the songs arranged by Quincy Jones, but he was also the conductor. I still have the LP released in July 1966 where it clearly states : Arranged and Conducted by Quincy Jones. The tracks were recorded during performances in January and February of 1966. It was and still is one of my favorite Sinatra albums.
One of favorite albums -- introduced to us by friends at dinner 20 years ago -- go to album for pre dinner music.

RE: Community Band
As i listed starting this thread -- our program last Sunday was:
Coronation March - Tchaikovsky
Mambo - L Bernstein
Gershwin Tribute to Love
Raiders March - Williams
An American Elegy - Tichelli
Suite Francaise - Milhaud
Liberty Bell March - Sousa
The Lord of the DanceSome of these were truncated but nevertheless difficult. It was a long program and we pulled it off. The second group played Holst 2. They pulled it off. The previous week our Jazz band programed:
Day by Day -- arranged by Bill Stapleton
Blue Bossa - arr To Kubis
Girl Talk -- Hefts
In the wee Small Hours -- arr Billy Byers
Satin Doll -- arr Sammy Nestico
Critics Choice -- Oliver Nelson
Tribute - Bob Mintzer
When You Go -- Brown arr by Goeff Keezer
Spectrum - Bob Mintzer
Emanicpatoin Blues - Olliver Nelson
Splanky - Heftithese were all original professional charts -- and we did very well.
My point is not to limit or discount "community bands".

RE: Community Band
I think this is a good feed for a dedicated thread. For all of the "community band" (or other amateurs): What are you playing? What are your programs? Where are you performing? What are the issues affecting your survival.
I would love to see the programing for other groups around the country. Concert Band, Quintets, Jazz Bands etc.. -

Pic mouthpieces
I am borrowing a Getzen Eterna Pic to try my hand (embouchure) at playing pic in our quintet. Did not come with a mouthpiece. Owner uses one of his trumpet mouthpieces. I just tried my Schilke 14A4a and 13A4a and they seemed ok. Any suggestions for alternatives? I am not willing buy a pic mouthpiece for the trial - though am interested in opinions should i choose to buy my own pic.

RE: I played a D# !!
D# -- equivalent to E flat. Hayden. I always wanted to get to the point where I can play Hayden. I play in the jazz band and have worked on register for three or four years. Now i can do the D# in Hayde or elsewhere. Congratulations -- now the challenge is to keep it and make it part of your regular routine.

Brass Quintet
Colorado Springs -- High Country Brass
We are performing Ewald Quintet 2 (only 1st movement because of time restrictions) - Do Nothing till You hear from Me (Elkjer arrangement) and an arrangement of Japanese Video Game Music "Storming the Castle." Fun program.

RE: No real gains on anything more than 40-45 minutes of practice.
Last December I had pneumonia and did not play for about three weeks. I followed "rehabilitation" routine for about a week and was soon back to where I was prior to the pneumonia. Mostly the routine was strict adherence to Early pages of Schlossberg.
I complain about two hour rehearsals in our jazz band (I am playing lead) BUT. those weekly two hour rehearsals gradually build up your endurance.
My practice sessions are much shorter, often several times during the day with long periods in between.

RE: Schilke Club?
I played on an Olds Recording in high school - it was stolen when i was in college. Replaced with a Selmer Paris. Added a Bach Strad 37. Then added a Schilke X3.
I continue with the X3 - I have rotated the Bach into the Quintet i play in- but the the consensus is that the X3 fits better. I also use it in the symphonic community band and as lead in the community jazz big band. It has quirks, but .. they all do.
I am not a "club" person, but I would love to have a forum to read and discuss the idiosyncracies of Schilke product.
