    • RE: Does a large bore horn take more air?

@Dr-Mark said in Does a large bore horn take more air?:

Here's a little snippet from Yamaha:
The bore of a wind instrument is the internal diameter of the tube through which the air passes when the player blows into the instrument. Since the size of the bore determines the volume of breath required, it will also affect the timbre.
In increasing size, bores are described as "medium bore," "medium-large bore," or "large bore." The smaller the bore, the less breath is required, resulting in an instrument that is easier to play and which boasts a subtle, mellow timbre. A larger bore requires more breath and produces a rich, flamboyant timbre and a higher volume.
      Hope this helps
      Dr.Mark

No, this does not help: Explain me the rich, flamboyant timbre and the higher volume of a Conn Connstellation.

      It's a medium bore instrument...

The Connstellation and the Conn 22B 'Victor' share the bore size but have a completely other 'feel' : Bore size says nothing

@Kehaulani said in Does a large bore horn take more air?:

Then, why do some players "run out of air/gas" in large-bore horns quicker than in smaller-bore horns?

Now that is a very good question! Since my Getzen 900 LB took so many less air to fire up rather than the Getzen 900 Severinsen ML I had to sell the latter, same thing for my Bach 180/43* rather then the old Bach 180/37...
Both horns ML bore but the 180/43* sucked all the air out of me

My old Conn 'Victor' 22B (M bore) had the same feel like my Bach 180/37 ML bore
The Getzen Eterna 700S ML bore feels a lot tighter than my Conn 18B Director M bore

Bore size said nothing, there are simply too many parameters in trumpets to judge them on bore size only; you'll have to try them

To me it looks like a NYS. Nice trumpet, if you could go there take it!

    • RE: B&S Trumpets

After reading so many hallelujah stories about B&S trumpets I had to give that brand a try.

Mod. 3137 Challenger I: Bach 180/37 copy. A well made horn, good valves but the sound didn't even come close to my old Elkhart Bach 180/37. Sold it to a German guy

Mod. MBX. 72-ish bell, ml. bore, l leadpipe and tuning slide. Good sounding horn but to me way too heavy. I traded this one in for a Yamaha 8130 Z. The latter was way easier to play for me

Mod. eXquisite Malcolm McNab. Copy of his old m-bore Vincent Bach Stradivarius. This one I ordered from Thomann; in 2009 they where the only shop who had them in stock. Beautiful made instrument but for me so hard to play that I was glad that I could return it. The m-bore Conn 22B 'Victor' turned out to be a way better match, that one I played for years until I exchanged her for a Getzen Eterna

At least I gave it a try but I.ll have to say that to me the B&S trumpets where one big disappointment

    • RE: Student trumpets

My Getzen Capri sounds way brighter than my Getzen Eterna 900LB but she plays almost equal. To me the best student horn ever.
My Conn Director isn't a bad horn either but the difference between the Director and my former Conn Victor 22B is way bigger than the former example

    • RE: Student trumpets

@Dr-GO , to me mister Morgan does not sound very good on this horn, the man could play! but that is another discussion. If you want to let us hear a pro playing on a student horn you'd better come with Chet Baker playing on Scolastics, Getzen Capri's etc. etc.
I really never understood the hallelujah about Olds Ambassadors but it seems to me I will never have friends anyway

Charlie Melk did recently his magic on a totally worn out valves of an Olds Super of mine, that instrument returned technically like new 🙂

      I do recommend his service

@Brian-Moon I compared the 43* to my old 37 standard 180-37 with standard lead pipe

    • RE: Trumpets Made ONLY by Their Maker

I have been playing a Franz Straub for years. He builded (don't know if he is still in business) his trumpets around a Bauernfeind valve machine, as Hub Van Laar did and Miel Adams does. It was a very good instrument.
I sold the Franz Straub for a trumpet with a non 72-ish bell

Willson makes his own valves as -I think- Spiri does, both Swiss musical instrument makers

On the former TrumpetMaster forum was a very nice post from Jens Lindemann about mouthpieces; the article was a very handy tool for trumpeters who might go for a mouthpiece safari

Did anyone made a copy of that article? Would be nice ànd very useful to share it here 🙂

it would've been nice to have this advice when I started to learn as an 8 year old.

      Does that make sense?

      Yes, big time

My ol' Bach Stradivarius 180-37 from 1978, a very good instrument, patched many times, great sound.
I sold her for a Getzen 900LB from the 90's with a sound app. as the Bach but the Getzen turned out to be an even better player!

Recently I bought a 180-43 from late 80's but is that one already 'vintage'?

    • RE: Free blowing Bach 43 lightweight

According to the Bach loyalist the 'A' lead pipe is officially a c-trumpet lead pipe https://www.bachloyalist.com/trumpet/trumpet_leadpipes.htm: "Longer than 25C. Many people find this has slightly less resistance than the 25C...Not much of a difference at all..."
Maybe both the 'A' lead pipe and the 43 lightweight bell result in the free blowing sensation?

Yesterday I tried the trumpet in the rehearsal for the amateur Symphony Orchestra (with the Warburton 4M plus 4 backbore). The sound was great, I liked it even better than my ol' 180-37
We played Mozart Zauberflöte and Tsjaikovski 'Mozartina'

    • Free blowing Bach 43 lightweight

Got a new toy last week: A Vincent Bach ML 180-43 lightweight 🙂

Nice, good sounding but I noticed that this horn is way more free blowing as my -former- 180-37
can it be that the 'A' lead pipe on the instrument causes this sensation?

I play it now with a Warburton 4 backbore to create at least enough resistance for me since I like some resistance in the blow
