A similar dilemma occurred when a Pioneer-era tabernacle burned to the ground in Provo, Utah USA. True, it wasn't nearly as historic as the Notre-Dame Cathedral, but it had significance to the community and was a huge blow to the city. The owner of the chapel, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints deliberated for a bit and ultimately decided to rebuild it as one of their temples. The entire foundation was gutted, the brick walls were undercut and placed on stilts and they rebuilt the foundation with quake-proof supports. Then, the interior and roof were completely remade. The end result was stunning, and the differences were quite remarkable. I played a gig in the original tabernacle once, and while you can't "gig" in the new building, I have seen photos of the interior and it is exquisite. Talk about restoration. Interestingly enough, they also have plans to do the same to the Salt Lake City Temple, a massive granite edifice that took the pioneers 40 years to build.

By the way, I'm not actually sure who owns the cathedral. Is it the City of Paris, the Country of France or the Catholic Church?

                Clever. 🙂

@Voltrane thanks for the answer. That's what I suspected.

It could rotate on the top of the spire!
