Returning to the trumpet after a 65 year layoff. Played the trumpet when Ike was in the White House. For me, it's not like riding a bike. After one month I can play a mean Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

After 65 years for me I play Tinkle Tinkle which explains my current relationship with my urologist. Welcome to TB were we say it as it is.

Gee, WildWilly, I thought my coming back after a 50 year layoff was a big deal, but 65 years ? Wow. Congrats. I am 84, how old are you ?
Also, I have a feeling you will be doing just fine in two or three months. I started playing again in the spring of 2016 and was playing first chair with the local Horizons band in the fall. These days I am playing with this areas highly rated brass and reed band and having a ball. Well, that was until Covid 19 came along.

I am new to playing any music and chose the trumpet at the ripe old age of 45 to learn while locked down in March this year, I am married with 3 kids & a very patient wife who became a flutist on the same day
Been working away on the trumpet with youtub, Tonesto and the very nice folks here.
I took the plunge today and have got myself a Thomann T800 - its a big chunk of change for me, so fingers crossed it arrives safely!!
Current songs I am working this week are Fields of Athenry and the tune to the Godfather - some mid D's and lots of slurring - none of which I can do at all well (As my neighbours know all too well) but its a work in progress.

Is that Godfather piece titled Speak Softly Love ? I love that piece and play it often. It is a great practice piece for boning up on playing intervals. It will be good for you. I have it in two different keys: B minor and a transposed C minor, which I prefer. -

Yeah, that's it, but the key I play it in would have the highest note a top space E and it sounds much better on the horn in a higher key. I saw an arrangement of it somewhere where the highest note was a G above the staff. I'm sure that would sound super great.
Even in that lower key you play now it will be good for developing the muscles in your chops. It not only sounds pretty but it's good for you, too... LOL ! -

Started at 10, yeah now the years make sense. I was 16 going on 17 when I first studied trumpet at a local conservatory of music. I played through the mid 50s and early 60s with a 5 piece combo. I stopped playing in 1965 and didn't touch a horn again until 2016. -

I’m Dave. Married for 46 years, two sons. The youngest is now an American! Although in his defence, he said he had his fingers crossed while taking the oath, so it doesn’t really count. And anyway he took an oath to Her Majesty the Queen as an Army Officer and a Queen outranks a President. He moved to Texas at Christmas, have yet to visit there. Covid has stopped our yearly visit. The other son is a Firefighter. I was a cop in London for 30 years, in various roles. Beat cop. Mounted Branch for 4 years. Back to beat and then into Firearms. Was what you call SWAT, as an operator and Instructor for 18years. A policy decision meant you could only specialise for 5 years, so had to move on. I moved to Royalty Protection, where I was a Bodyguard to the Royal Family. Stayed there until my 30 years was served, so retired.
Never had any musical interest, other than being a rock drummer in my teens. In my 30’s I bought a trumpet and Tune a Day book 1. I then taught myself to play and read music. Badly! I gave up several times over the years and eventually went along to a brass band. Turned out my self teaching wasn’t very good. The book said press 1 & 2 and that was an A. Turns out my A was an E, oops. Anyway gradually improved on cornet, eventually moved to tenor horn. After several years I gave up altogether. After retiring and moving to the country my wife insisted I found a hobby of some sort. I joined a local brass band, on tenor horn. Got promoted quite quickly to solo horn. After a few years I decided I didn’t really like brass band music, so left and bought a trumpet. Still have no idea what the scales are called, just look at the key and play accordingly. Played in a concert band and an orchestra, now I get to play in a local theatre in the pit band for musicals and Pantomimes. Still haven’t had a single music lesson. Can’t play without sheet music. Might retire again soon, losing interest with nothing to practice for.
Nearly as good as I need to be. Not nearly as good as I want to be).

No don't do it... as fate has it, as soon as you do, you will be asked to do a gig and you will wish you had stayed with it...
Also sorry you are not coming back to the states, but truly understand as it is CRAZY here. So do stay safe.

Let's just say it that way. And, oh yeah, visit in the wintertime. Coming from London, you won't be acclimated to Texas summers. And, oh yeah #2, buy travel insurance and medical evacuation insurance. You don't want to get sick in Texas and try to get treated with NHS coverage.

I don't know, Texas is pretty darn big. I suspect they have just about every geographical feature that any other state has, except maybe 14k' peaks.
