      "And if you want to play around on a mouthpiece safari first, go for the Arnolds & Sons range, sometimes marketed as Stoelzel. They are reliable copies of Bach favourites at incredibly low prices..."

      Better made than some Bachs in the '90s. Using these mouthpieces allow us to try all kinds of modifications cheaply. Throat sizes (drill bit and a vice) can be easily enlarged, as well as the backbore (fingernail files for reamers).

      A fun project is to match the popping frequency of the backbore to the cup, filing off the end of the shank until they match--then machine a Morse taper to the appropriate end diameter.

      Adds zing to the response.

      We can hear the timbre changes if we cup one ear and play a scale.

    • RE: How many measures on a tank of air?

      The second trumpet part in the Canadian Brass arrangement of Bach's "Little Fugue in C Minor" has an eleven bar phrase of sixteenths at one point. I didn't write just "BB" on my part, but rather "BFB."

    • RE: Vernacular (of range)

      @Dr-GO, in contemporary German brass-lingo we called a double high C a "C5," (B4 concert pitch) and the pedal C a "C1."

      International Standards (ISO) name the C below the treble staff and above the bass as "middle C." (That makes sense because it is in the middle between the two staves.) Middle C is C4. Pedal C is C3 and C in the staff a C4.

      Played Bach and Handel with a couple other trumpet players on A piccolo trumpets and our first rehearsal was something by Handel, so the parts were notated in C. Took us a while to figure out that one of us was talking in sounding pitch, one in written pitch and one in A. Depending on who you asked, the same note could be a "D"," "C" or "F."

      @JWM Rather than the "D"-shaped tuning crook, the rounded is shaped more like a semi-circle.

    • RE: How do you feel about vibrato?

      Some people have but one vibrato, and we need a wide variation, from shimmer to Harry James. Saxophonists practice vibrato in time--quarter notes, eighth, etc as to be able to control it.

    • RE: What are pedal tones on the trumpet?

      @trumpetsplus I've noticed that the mouthpieces that work best on a given trumpet, the ones that make the trumpet "sing," make for an easy in-tune Pedal C.

    • RE: Valve combination 1 and 3

      A Bb trumpet has longer valve slides than a C trumpet, because it is lower.

      The 3 valves lower the pitch of the trumpet by one whole tone, one halftone, and a tone and a half respectively.

      When we press down the first valve, we change from a trumpet in Bb to one in Ab. When we add the third valve it is too short. That is why we have that finger ring on most third valve slides, to help us compensate for low D and C#.
