RE: Eugene Blee's Flexibility Exercises
Wow ... those look familiar. I never took lessons with EB, but did for 6 years with CSO section mate Michael Denovchek.
I particularly like the measures of rest .... -
RE: Buy your horns here, not there!
I’ve never had any issues buying horns via the Internet and have had solid experiences purchasing anywhere from 1-4 horns from each of the following:
-
Austin Custom Brass:
https://www.austincustombrass.biz/- I’ve purchased the most horns from Trent + had him handle the build on my bespoke Adams A4 LT-S = always a great experience.
-
Josh Landress Brass:
http://www.jlandressbrass.com/our-store.htm -
Baltimore Brass:
https://www.baltimorebrass.net/index.php?cat=1 -
Thompson Music:
https://thompsonmusic.com/ -
The Horn Trader:
http://www.horntrader.com/11-bb-trumpets
Some offer ‘trial’ periods, which I’ve really appreciated ... though I’ve never not liked a horn or returned one.
I know that consignment services are also offered by most, which is a huge headache saver.
1 other shop that I’ve viewed often, but never purchased from is Schmitt Music’s Trumpet Shop. Anyone have experience with them?

RE: Is a $280 New Bach Stradivarius Trumpet too good to be true?
@ACB Trent makes that $280 axe sound pretty good!
Yes, the rare model 143! That just makes ya mad ... as I’m sure so many probably get sucked in on these. Sad. Parents are often cheap when it comes to getting first instruments, and I understand, because you don’t know if the kid will stick with it or not.
I remember while working at Baldwin Piano back in the ‘80’s, we had a comic on the wall of a kid and his dad standing in front of a 100-year old upright piano missing key tops, with broken stings sticking out where body panels were missing, and looking like a piece of junk. Dad was smiling (while the kid looked stunned) as he said to his son, ‘we got you this starter piano to learn on. Once you learn how to play this one, we’ll get you a nice one’!
Not everyone can afford a nice new instrument for their kid, but getting them a crap instrument really lowers their chance of ever learning to play. Instrument rentals are a nice option, if you can rent a decent instrument ... not just a smashed Bundy that the dealer has been renting for the last 20 years.
BTW: Trent can make a garden hose sound really good, so don’t buy a knock-off Strad because it sounds good in the video above. Do your child a favor and get a decent horn. Buying a nice 2nd-hand Strad, Yamaha, or Getzen can be a great option that you’ll likely be able to sell in 2 years for exactly what you paid for it now ... IF it turns out that little Jimmy is going to be a soccer star and not the next band president at his school.
Trent also has some really nice playing ‘new’ horns that won’t break the bank ... so you ought to visit his website, give them a call with your questions, and get junior a horn that will help them become the best player possible... and then get your kid a good trumpet teacher! That is the other part of the success equation!

RE: A great cleaning breakthrough
Glad it worked = a noticeable difference! I am presuming that your Eterna is silver plated, so warm to fairly hot water is fine. Those with a lacquered horn should stick to warm water only. Using hot water, especially on older lacquer, will likely result in sheets of it going down the drain! Not the desired outcome.

@Richard-III is that horn for sale?
Yes! They have a few available now at the Austin Custom Brass website. I’ve played it, and it is a great horn!

RE: Flugel Thread
My flugel Days started in high school when I convinced my parents I needed one. I tried a Getzen 4-valve, an Olds Clark Terry, but the winner was a new Couesnon 140 at Ray Lammers Music in Cincinnati. I played it from 1979-2005. Great sound... lousy build quality and suspect intonation.
I commissioned Lawler to make me one, but I never liked it. Great sound and intonation, but it closed off at A above the staff, and after trying different MPs with the same issue, it was traded for a Weril Regium that I played at Miles Ahead Music in Louisville. My college buddy, Miles Davis (really! But not ‘that’ Miles) has a nice store worth checking out. It was a solid player, but I kept looking for a better axe. Enter the CarolBrass flugel! It looked amazing, and played easily, but the tone was muddy.
Then at the 2015 ITG I played every flugel I could find. Kept returning to the ACB room to play this one horn five different times during the day. It was an Adams F1 with a red brass bell that had a silver flair. I was stunned how nicely it played. I could not leave ITG without it!
My favorite MP is a Curry. I play the deepest one and the next to deepest one he makes. They have a great sound. I played more shallow ones in the past, but they sound too trumpety.

That was really nice, Gary! I’ll still never forget hearing you play your Getzen at the Blue Wisp Jazz Club in Cincinnati with the Eddie B Group = best thing I ever heard on flugel = EVER!

Just wanted to start a thread with pictures of copper or red brass horns. Like TobyLou8, I love copper ... to look at it and the way it sounds. So, show us your best copper axe!

@Shepherds_Crook Here is one that I hope shows the copper leadpipe, if it was replaced it must have been a long time ago as it looks original.
That's a beauty and I would be confused too. I does look like a 58B with a 6B/10B Coprion pipe!! Could be the pipe got red-rot and the opportunity was taken to make it work better decades later? ALL guessing on my part though. MORE pics if you can, thanks!!
First, congrats on figuring out how to post a pic. I always used Flickr and then post the code in here with around the code because that is how you had to do it on other forums...
Anyway, I think TobyLou8 is on target. Pinky ring looks like too much solder under it to be stock ... I think someone added that copper receiver and then added or moved the pinky ring. Again, that is a guess. Cool looking horn with the reverse wrap of the 3rd slide and tuning slide - very cool little horn. How does it play?

RE: Scream Machine by Maynard Ferguson... Wow!!
@Kehaulani said in Scream Machine by Maynard Ferguson... Wow!!:
After the first couple of licks, I really questioned whether or not this was Maynard. Thanks for the info. This is Maynard:
How about Slide Hampton keeping up on the trombone too. That is a great album!

I love The Boss, and have listened to his music more hours than some of you have been alive ... but can’t leave this thread without a mention of the ‘other’ Scream Machine!

RE: more of Maynard singing !!!!!
Just looked ... it is not listed on MF 4/5 Live at Jimmy’s. It is on side 2 of ‘Chameleon’ as GeorgeB noted. Not sure about on a BBN album, I stopped buying the records after ‘live from San Fransisco’.
‘Stan Kenton, he made me a star!’
Actually, I never liked it when he sang that live ... just wanted to hear more trumpet!

Timbre, phrasing, voicing, counterpoint, building to a climax - all here:
That specific version is my favorite Sinatra song of all time. The trumpets throughout are so tight, but that ‘shout chorus’ is super special! The reverb on the drums and percussion is also totally hypnotic and totally enjoyable. And Frank was pretty good too .... Great choice!
