"I just posted this excerpt from "A Timeline of Trumpets", pages 181-182 on TH in reply to a question about a Citation, and it occurred to me it was a good fit for this new section. (Before someone objects, I'm the author. When I republish it it doesn't count as plagiarism!)"

I watch The Daily Pigin Show by Island comic Andy Bumatai. He always says, after giving a piece of information, "But don't quote me. I might be wrong." LOL

George, you do realise, don't you, that a mobile is an emergency device, as well? If you have a traffic accident or a health emergency, help is only inches away. If you have to rely on a conventional phone, you just might lose your life.

What about the classic tin cans connected by metal wire?

That's too modern. We used string.

I'm a dinosaur, Steve. I threw my cell phone in the garbage when I retired 20 years ago..and with good reason. Today I only own and use a basic desktop computer.

And what then, a land-line phone?

    • BAC Benge price?

Does anybody know the price of a new BAC Benge?

I don't like BAC's hidden price policy where I have to give them a bunch of personal info that they can use to spam me with, before they give me the price. Thanks,

As an aside, has anyone played one of these?

I was taking a Japan Airlines flight from Tokyo to Wash. D.C. and got upgraded to first class because I was wearing a uniform. They served me a multi-course traditional Japanese banquet-meal that was to die for.

But you didn’t. And wouldn’t. Would you?
If you died for it, how would you eat it?

      I think I've already done that. 😄

    • RE: Company Timelines (Besson, Diston-Keefer, Frank Holton, Vincent Bach)

Thanks for the replies. I should've been more specific. I'm not concerned about the metallurgical properties or other such parameters, as much as I am concerned with how it plays and sounds. In other words, I don't so much care how one got there but what the results are.

@OldSchool, I may have asked you before (age befuddlement), but is there a modern trumpet that is the same as a pre-WWII French Besson? And, now that a lot of time has passed, in comparison with modern horns (any brand), what are the advantages and disadvantages of the Besson? (if it exists)?

Feedback I have heard is that it holds its own tonally with the favorite second generation, but with a little more security in the slotting - more like a Handcraft. And with superior native intonation to any.

      I did not say that.

Thanks for that lineage. So the new Committee is made by Kanstul tools but supervised by people who are administrators and not instrument makers? And bottom line . . how does it play?

That nesw BAC Committee sure looks sweet but $4700.00 - yikes!

    • RE: That's all?

As an afterthought, I suppose an auditioner, if perverse enough, could always say, "Now play the Hindemith in F#".

I can second the comment from barliman on the lengthy process. Once, I auditioned for a newly formed wind ensemble at one of Germany's Hochschule fur Musik and got to wondering why the results were so long in coming. I found out that, unlike in America where an application would be handled within the school itself, in Germany they sent the application packages around to each of the schools of music for their input. 😨

Play it at a speed that you can play it error-free and then play it again regardless of tempo, but this time in a purely musical/expressive manner. Then combine the two, gradually playing it faster but never ignoring the musical phrasing.

    • RE: That's all?

The auditioners are, perhaps, so skilled at what they do that these two pieces show them all they need. Plus, they may be auditioning for a specific seat, which has requirements specific to that position.
