I know nothing about Game of Thrones either. Never seen it, don't understand all the hub-bub about it.

Now someone earlier mentioned Star Trek. Now you're talking! I still am a HUGE Star Trek fan, and have all the original episodes on DVD, along with the 6 original movies. My family watched every single episode in the 60's and every single one of us got hooked, and never missed it!

      @BigDub

Yeah, both The Masters and the US Open are the most watched golf tournaments on TV. As an amateur golfer, you watch golf on TV and see how the pros do it, and then you go out and try to emulate them (and fail every time! 😢 )

Here is a chart that I found on the internet that describes each golf club in a bag, how various people (ladies, amateurs, seniors, PGA pros, etc...) hit them. The top line is clubhead speed (i.e. right there at the bottom of the golf swing, a microsecond before impact). The PGA pros, like the young Irish kid named Rory McIlroy regularly drives the golf ball well over 300 yards off the tee! 👍

I remember using one of those training aid/measurement/teacher type of things. at a golf store, where you hit the golf ball indoors into a movie screen type of setup with all these radar machines and detectors and weird things like that. It showed me having an (avg) 96 mph clubhead speed, which usually brings me to an (avg) of 250-255 yards off the tee.

LOL... I double checked it. I hit the ball pretty much equal to, or a hair further than the LPGA (The ladies pro golfers?) 😆

Worst moment ever, where I almost needed psychiatric counseling afterwards - landing in a massive greenside sand trap, that was full of very fluffy, very deep, sand (sand trap/bunker shots are my weakness anyway)... Swing - miss, ball still at my feet, sand flew everywhere. Swing again, ball went 2 feet and rolled back to me. Swing yet again, ball hit the top lip/grass knoll, and rolled back down into the bunker. Final swing, ball finally got out, but landed way far away from the cup. Long story short: I scored a quadruple bogey 8 on that hole! 😢

I was never that serious about it - I probably would have picked up the ball and chucked it up out of the sand trap, then proceeded to play it, adding only one stroke for the toss up out of the trap.

LOL... Like the "toe tap" that people do on the golf green, tapping the ball into the cup! 😁

@trickg --- I blame my wife's brother-in-law (her sister's husband) for getting me into this cruel sport back in the 80's.... He was really good - I mean good, as in, he used to play in some amateur tournaments in upstate NY! Nowadays, he's slowed up and can't smash the ball like he used to, but he still gets out there and plays.

Anyway, back then we went to one of the local driving ranges and he showed me this, showed me that, and personally taught me how to hit each and every club in the bag. So, I immediately went out and bought a set of beginner Wilson golf clubs back then, and slowly got better, but never good enough like he was or anything like that. Right now I have a set of Ping clubs and a beautiful Odyssey putter, along with a custom made mallet style putter with my name on it, that a friend of my neighbor's made for me (he builds golf clubs and components in his basement).

Best round of golf ever - 82.

Longest drive ever (paced off from a sprinkler head/marker) - 287 yards.

Best moment ever, that still can't be duplicated - hitting a crisp 7-iron from the fairway dead straight to the green, but the wind caught it and carried it a little further. The ball landed at the back of the green near the embankment, took a lucky bounce, rolled backwards back onto the green, followed the contour/break of the green, and rolled right into the cup! EAGLE! 😁 😎

You have to give credit where credit's due.... Tiger Woods (after something like 14 years) came roaring back at age 43 to win The Masters! 😎

Back in his day, he was unbelievable, and would win and win and win, and basically turned the whole golf industry upside-down. But it took a toll on his body and he seriously screwed up his back, etc... had to quit for a while, have surgery/multi-surgeries, recover, go through PT, etc... and slowly worked his way back. And he proved all the "naysayers" wrong, and won The Masters this afternoon!

Golf is an addicting sport, where there is no margin for error. One tiny degree off, when smacking the golf ball off the tee, will send the ball slicing off into the trees never to be seen again. Putting is where the game is won or lost. You may think that the ball is only 8 feet away and it's a straight shot, just tap the ball and it'll roll right into the cup. Pffffffttttt... That ball will curve and veer off when you least expect it. It's a sport that can elate you to greatness and it can drive you to your knees in despair.

Who else plays golf on here?

Unless it's a Gill Evans arrangement.

And which also "includes" several instruments left out. 😀

Butch - what you are describing is not the difference between a full arrangement and a H.S. jazz band, but between a concert band and a jazz band.

      I stand corrected...

I assume the writer/arranger added the parts in case a director wanted to use the piece in a concert band type of setup.

Looking over various "set lists" from people, I have noticed that George's music is on par with The Shriners Band here in town. We are sort of a "community band" type of arrangement, but yet we're Shriners as well as Freemasons.

Here's a sample from our "set list" (Note: it is mostly marches, which --no offense-- can get rather tiring/annoying after a while. I mean, like, "another march? seriously?": 🙄 )

      Alamo
      Chimes of Liberty
      The Saint's Hallelujah
      Colonel Bogey
      Covington Square
      Battle of Midway
      The Happy Wanderer
      Allied Honor
      Hoop-Dee-Doo
      E Pluribus Unum
      Gallant Marines
      The Longest Day
      The Footlifter
Just A Closer Walk With Thee
      Highlights from My Fair Lady
Highlights from Man Of La Mancha
      Highlights from South Pacific
      The Klaxon
      ......................................................................
As the new 2019 VP of the band, I am trying to persuade the "older guys" to lighten up a bit and have some fun. Let's play something more lively and more towards the jazzy Big Band type of sound. Enough with the marches already, sheesh...
I am pushing for us to get copies of:
It's Only A Paper Moon (full arrangement, not the basic HS jazz band setup).
Here's That Rainy Day (again - full arrangement, not the basic HS jazz band setup).

Ah.... The classic "Wish You Were Here" album! 😎

If I set my full size Yamaha on tone bank #107 (synth), then I can play that loooooong sustained Gm chord with my left hand, and my right hand can perfectly imitate Richard Wright's single note melody on "Shine On You Crazy Diamond"!

How about the ultimate, mind blowing, music from the legendary band Pink Floyd -- especially the You Tube clip from their DVD concert called "Pulse" which was from their 1994 concert at Earl's Court in England?

Comfortably Numb... Sit back and listen to David Gilmour's incredible guitar solo (along with the laser lights and their famous stage show) starting at around 4:55 or so until the end:

      @BigDub

I was always a Mets fan. My whole family was. Before I was born (1961) everyone rooted for the Brooklyn Dodgers. If you rooted for the Yankees, you were almost ostracized and cut out of a will! LOL!! 😁

I have been to Yankee Stadium only one time when I was a kid, and that was just for historical purposes, just to say "I've been there". We didn't root for either team, but were there marveling at the stadium and how rabid the fans were.

See, in New York, you can only be a Mets fan or a Yankees fan -- you can't be both. I have seen the Mets so many times over the years, and sat all over the stadium. The best seats (going back to the days of Shea Stadium) we always tried to get were the 2nd level above the Mets dugout, along 1st base. We always brought along our baseball gloves too, in hopes of catching a foul ball. Plus with me playing varsity baseball in HS (right field), I always watched the 1st baseman (lefty) and the right fielder (lefty), since I was sort of an odd-ball in my baseball stance, where I batted righty but threw lefty. It always threw the opposing team at first, since they assumed I batted lefty, but I'd step up to the plate righty and their fielders would immediately have to reposition themselves. LOL...

So many fond memories of baseball! What I wouldn't give to be here! 😎

      Baseball?

I was born, bred, and raised, and diehard NY Mets fan! 😀

As a kid growing up in upstate New York (Poughkeepsie) -- roughly 2 hours, including traffic, from NYC, we would always go down to Shea Stadium (now Citi Field) and see the Mets play ball. So many wonderful memories!

Edit (to make this trumpet related): Can you imagine playing trumpet in the stadium, out on the field at 2nd base or something? Or play like The Beatles did back in the day, and have so many screaming fans, that you can't even hear yourself play? LOL...

    • Taps on a real bugle (as per my post on Facebook)

You all know that I am active with the Shriners and a Past Master of a Masonic lodge, right? I play 2nd chair trumpet with the "Million Dollar Band" and also cornet (flugelhorn part) with the Sauerkrauts (aka the German band) here in Richmond, VA at the ACCA Shrine Center. During our quarterly business meetings, the band plays a number or two, along with the National Anthem, when the color guard presents the flag. Anyway, during the meeting when the "Grand Poobah's" are all giving their speeches, presentations, etc... I always get called on to play "Taps" during the memorial section of the meeting, which is why I decided to buy a real bugle instead of playing it on trumpet or cornet.

---------- My amusing post that I wrote on Facebook on Friday -----------
I forgot to mention about last night, over at the ACCA Shrine during rehearsal with The Sauerkrauts (aka the Shriners German Band)... John Conover (Tuba) was busy attending a meeting in the other room, so we all setup on the stage for rehearsal. Anyway, to my surprise, John came out to chat with us after the meeting was over, and looked at me and said, "You played 'Taps' this past Tuesday at the main business meeting, right?" I told him, "Yes, and I brought along my real bugle too". Well, to my surprise John said, "Uh... They were talking about you". {Me - surprised look, pointing to myself like, "Who? Me?} John continued, "They said you did an excellent job too. Just so you know, and keep this as a reminder... You are, now, and forever, will be the ACCA Shriners official bugler!" 😀

Anyway.... Does anyone else think it is more appropriate to play "Taps" on a real bugle, live in person standing at attention, rather than have someone hit the Play button on a CD?
