RE: Taps on a real bugle (as per my post on Facebook)
Instead of creating a new thread about playing "Taps" on my Bugle, I'll continue with this thread that I originally posted about...
Last week Tuesday over at the ACCA Shriners Center, we had our quarterly business meeting. The band plays the National Anthem, one or two numbers, and then I get called on to play "Taps".
My buddy Roger (Euphonium) took this (not the best quality / camera phone) photo of me in action. Allow me to explain why I do what I do, as it might look a little odd to some....
I am standing at attention, cradling my Fez in my left hand.
I am in the middle of playing "Taps".
My horn is up sort of like the marching band phrase "bells to the box", so I'm not directly blasting people straight on.
Lastly and extremely personal, my eyes are closed, as in my opinion, "Taps" is very very moving, and it comes straight from my soul... -
RE: Community Band
From what I have seen, the full arrangement includes clarinets, flutes, french horn, etc... --- things you don't see in a common jazz band setup.
I assume the writer/arranger added the parts in case a director wanted to use the piece in a concert band type of setup.

RE: Rock, Pop, Classic 70's "Horn Bands" from back in the day?

Thanks for that great welcome. Nice going with the new site.
You mentioned Blood Sweat & Tears before... What an amazing, legendary, band!
Check out their classic song "Smiling Phases".which was originally written by the rock band Traffic. BST took the song and jazzed it up with their incredible horn section!

RE: Farewell
Oh man, sorry to hear... I wish you the best with your trumpet career.
Remember the line in that Eagles song "Hotel California":
You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave...

RE: Rock, Pop, Classic 70's "Horn Bands" from back in the day?
I have watched a bunch of You Tube clips of that Russian band called "Leonid and Friends". They are absolutely mind blowing! They not only play Chicago, dead-on, 100%, note for note, but they also can do Earth, Wind & Fire, and also Blood, Sweat & Tears too.
It's kind of funny when you watch some of the other You Tube clips (non musical). It's obvious they are all pure, solid, Russian, but only 2 or 3 of them are able to hold an "English" interview with a reporter & camerman! ...just sayin'
They must have not only learned Chicago's songs musically, but they learned to sing them PHONETICALLY as well. That in itself is a serious challenge!!
Incredible...
