RE: Most bang for your buck!
@ROWUK I knew someone who said that one of the best bits of advice he got from his dad was: "Always buy the best; you'll never be disappointed." I find this advice to be true for at least two additional reasons. First, your budget is then limited to acquiring things that matter the most, sparing you from collecting junk. Second is that I find that the best is rarely the most expensive to purchase; the equation of price with value can very well be a mistake.

RE: For those who remember gunshowtickets
I spoke with Giancarlo's dad a few minutes ago, and he said that the sentencing of Lynn Fogarty will take place as scheduled on July 1, at 9:00 AM at York County Circuit Court, 300 Ballard St., Yorktown, VA 23690. COVID-19 guidelines will be followed. Hopefully there will be no more delays and that the judge will hand down an appropriate sentence.

RE: Flat 'naturals' on old cornet
Sometimes a mute can be adjusted by adjusting the corks. If I remember correctly, the rule of thumb (which may not always apply) is that the farther in the bell a mute is, the sharper the pitch becomes, and that the farther out the mute is, the flatter the pitch. Thick corks can be sanded down, and thin corks can be replaced with thicker ones. Also, the position of the corks on the mute can determine how far into the bell a mute goes, so repositioning the corks might be a better strategy than altering the corks themselves.
Most mutes work fine without adjusting them, and at your early stage of development, your playing technique could be the problem, not the mutes. Finding a competent teacher is not necessarily easy, especially during the current pandemic, but money on lessons is generally well-spent. Approaching trumpet playing without enough guidance can leave you with bad habits that you may or may not be able to overcome later, when your mistakes manifest themselves in unpleasant ways.

RE: Any recent experience on resuming playing after CAGS?
@tjcombo I wish you a speedy and complete recovery. Pay attention to your body and what it tells you. I think you have enough experience in life to combine enthusiasm and wisdom.

A Minor Miracle
I have a vintage cornet case that is presentable in appearance but had a musty smell that I could not get rid of. I was able to eliminate all offensive odor from the velvet inside, but the outside did not respond to anything I tried, including alcohol, Lysol, baking soda, sunlight, vinegar, bleach, odor sprays, lacquer thinner, and shoe polish. I did not want to strip the finish, prime, and paint the case, so I shopped for a cornet case I could use, although I preferred to use the original one.
Then I stumbled across a container of Simple Solution pet stain and odor remover http://www.simplesolution.com/dog-odor-and-stain-remover/tough-odors/extreme-pet-stain-odor-remover-32oz that I had stored in my laundry room for years and years. This product uses enzymes and a proprietary pro-bacteria to break down the source of the stench. I put on nitrile gloves and wiped the outside of the case with a cloth saturated in the solution, letting it dry, and not wiping it off. Finally success! The case now has a pleasant scent without a trace of the former mustiness.

Insurance
Larry’s barn burned down and his wife, Susan called the insurance company.
Susan spoke to the insurance agent and said, “We had that barn insured for fifty thousand dollars, and I want my money.”
The agent replied, “Whoa there, just a minute. Insurance doesn’t work quite like that. An independent adjuster will assess the value of what was insured, and then we’ll provide you with a new barn of similar worth.”
There was a long pause, and then Susan replied, “If that’s how it works, then I want to cancel the life insurance policy on my husband.” -
RE: Band Re-start for Fall
@newell-post When politics and fear overrule facts and common sense, we get eye pollution like this photograph. Covering your nose and mouth tightly with Duck Tape is 100% effective against COVID-19. Much better than a flimsy mask.

RE: THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED
The concept of using persuasion instead of pressure in a culture of power, aggression, fear, and submission is naive. In such a culture, superior power and dominance is respected and provokes cooperation, while pleas for civil behavior are considered weak and deserving of ridicule and derision. There are those who understand this and are capable of exercising strength, and there are others who either disbelieve the reality of it or have no clue.

@bigdub said in A little humour:
I saw an ad for a radio for 1$!! But the volume was stuck on full.
I decided I can’t turn that down.
Sold by a high volume dealer, no doubt.
