      I totally agree.

I have said for years that the instrument, the mouthpiece and the embouchure form a system and all parts can either work against each other and the result is unhappiness or they all can work together and the result is joy.

Our task is to discover this joyous combination.

A few days ago I handed a 1948 Besson New Creation trumpet to a teacher for him to try and he clung on to it noodling and playing all sorts on it, he loved it and was having so much fun he didnt want to give it back. I got it back eventually.

Old instruments so often give new joy. They are a gift to us that just keeps on giving.

From the FAQ on the website saxophones made in China and Taiwan, reasonable assumption trumpets are too.

I agree with ROWUK. I started playing trumpet in third grade (no lessons) - gave it up but took up piano lessons -- resumed trumpet in 5th grade (no lessons) - continued both piano and trumpet --- between sixth grade and junior high school (6 grade to 7) i had my first lessons -- took lessons in both piano and trumpet throughout junior high and first two years of high school. Then moved to a nearby city - no lessons. Bought an illegal "fake book" and took a few lessons on piano from a teacher who for the first time in my "education" introduced me to the circle of fifths. No more trumpet lessons for twenty years. Then, perhaps one year of lessons from the local symphonic principal. He introduced me to long tones and breath attacks.

Otherwise - it is the love of music and the drive to get better at what you do.

I usually incorporate "moving long tones" in my practice routine. I find the concept appealing, especially the focus on the sound. There are several examples: some giving credit to Cichowicz, others in the same or similar form, or you can create your own. Major elements include focus on the sound, not overdoing, and alternating registers. Actual Cichowica studies are likely "public domain" since you can find them easily by goggle searching

      Bob Pixley

I use 4 different books: Arban's (everyone needs this), the Brandt orchestral etudes (exercises, but with some musicality), the Clarke technical studies (harder exercises than Arban's and some challenging solos in the back), and the Schlossberg daily drills (flexibility and range).
