Surgery was partly successful, but the eye still needs lots of time to recover. I am not allowed to play trumpet or drive myself or have sex...

RE: Still unable to log in under the original barliman2001 tag, and in hospital...
OK, here's the update, and it does not come from "barliman@st.peter.sky"
The operation went well, and was done under local anesthesia only. They discovered that part of the retina was already sticking to the lens... and had a tough time getting everything back into shape. Vision as yet? none. They have to do another surgery similar to this one in three weeks, and only then can they foresee how things will turn ou.
Painful in the extreme. -
Still unable to log in under the original barliman2001 tag, and in hospital...
Ok, guys, here's the news: I still can't get in under the original nickname. But that's small fry.
Last week, when on an orchestra week in Cefalù, Sicily (playing French horn parts on Flugel), my right eye suddenly went black. The local hospital did not have ophthalmology, so they carted me to Palermo. Diagnosis: Severe retina and macula lift-off with heavy bleeding into the vitruous matter. They wanted to operate at once, but somehow I did not fancy the looks of the hospital - they had to treat the ultrasound machine with fisticuffs to get it going - so I had myself transported back to Munich by road ambulance. No flying according to doctor's advice. So, after 40 hours on the road - most of them on potholed Italian motorways - I arrived at a renowned private eye clinic in Munich. They confirmed the diagnosis and eve expanded it (the retina is in tatters) but declined to operate as they deem me to be a high ansthesia risk patient. They transferred me to the University Eye Clinic that was unable to operate on a Friday afternoon. So I'm stuck here now for the second night, waiting for the operation on Monday. They said they are getting in extra anesthesia specialists and an extra cardiologist just in case, but can't guarantee anything. Might turn out that they do the operation at high risk and then find out my sight won't improve. Just wanted you all to know the situation I'm in, and don't be surprised if I can't come online for a couple of days. If it's longer, well, you'd better ask Saint Peter, then. -

New viola joke!!
What's the difference between a viola and a coffin?
In the coffin, the corpse is inside.

LOGGING-IN PROBLEMS
Guys, for the last five days, TB refused to let me in. Right nickname, right e-mail, right password. Just no response. So I had to create a new account as barliman2002. Please look into it.
