I didn't think it was particularly beginner friendly. There's a video floating around by Clark Terry and he gets kids playing the blues immediately without a lot of extraneous information.

I think I'll have a look for that. One of Clark's tutorial videos was a big help to me in my 2016 comeback.

I borrowed from a friend. the Wynton biography book and his chapter on the blues was just perfect. Wish I still had it so I could provide some definitive lines and statements he made regarding the blues.

Watched the Wynton clip -- i liked it but view it as an intermediate lesson. I have found teaching music or an instrument to be exceeding difficult. I remember when my son was in Jr. High playing clarinet in the school band. He brought home an assignment to play something by ear - or at least transcribe it. I sat at the piano and played a simple piece and asked him repeat it. He experienced much more trouble and frustration than i anticipated.

Yes but in getting a kid going on the Blues, all you have to give them is a play-along backing, show them what a lick is, and teach them the form and the Blues Scale and turn them loose. The ear comes along but armed with what I just said, they can begin playing right away.

When I was mentoring a JR High jazz band, the director would write on the white board the notes in the blues scale then would have the rhythm section play the chords while choosing the student whose turn it was to play.
