2019 Jazz Festivals

Any members playing Jazz Festivals are encouraged to let us all know. If in the area, this may get our members to come out and support our TB family.
AND by coincidence, The Eddie Brookshire Quintet will be playing the Dayton Jazz Festival on Sunday, June 9th at the brand new Levitt Pavilion right in the heart of Dayton, across the street from the Dayton Convention Center and on the grounds of the Crowne Plaza. We start at 7:30 pm.

I do not know if these two still happen, but when I lived in Idaho, both the Gene Harris and Lionel Hampton Jazz Festivals were excellent venues of world-class jazz.

I lived in Dayton about 35 years ago; you make me wish I still lived there.

Shifty.
Thanks for your comment. Dayton is making a change and for the good. There is a real resurgence to try to get people downtown once again. There has been much rebuilding with many housing units, brown stone style, that are bringing many more residents into the downtown area. There is the 5 Rivers Metro Park, 5/3 Field (Home of the Dayton Dragons), the Shuster Center (home for our symphony and many national acts), and now the Levitt Pavilion that provides free concert venues (many national acts) to Dayton. This is the first year that Levitt is home to the Dayton Jazz Festival:

If anybody's traveling abroad, the Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia, Italy is one of the best. Ten days of festival with the biggest names in jazz. And if you're inclined - that's in late afternoon and at night - during the day Berklee School of Music runs concurrently a two week workshop. I've done both about four of five times. Outstanding music and a killer hang (not to mention the overabundance of pulchritude).

Don't mind if I do Dr G. Anyone who is anywhere near Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia on the Queen's Birthday Weekend (7-9th June) should check out both the historic Old Gold-mining town and the jazz festival.
https://www.castlemainejazzfestival.com.au/Check out G&T Jazz for fine "new standards" written by our talented vocalist. We have two festival slots and the performance fee will go towards a recording session in the very near future.
-
tj, having played at the last two Castlemaine festivals we did not apply this year as we felt they were loosing the plot by requiring bands to submit a quote as to how much the band would charge to perform.
Regards, Stuart.

@stumac
we were a little taken aback too Stuart, but came up with a number which was accepted. This will now make a solid contribution to producing our first album. I'm still waiting to see if I'll have to stump up full price for ticket for my partner. -

I've got some U of I connections--some really good jazz to be heard in the Palouse year-round, not just at festivals! -
Someday I want to go to the Jazz Festivals in Europe. I have heard fables of that. Speaking of that, I just remembered that I went to Italy once with a group of classmates and it just so happened that Chick Corea was coming the following week to the very town we were in.

The day after. Here is a post of one of the songs the quintet played backing up the vocalist Brenda Flowers. I decided to bring out my Harrelson on this day as we had a two set with rather challenging ranges to play. This song was to be played by the sax player but at the last minute he punted the song over to me due to the break neck tempo. So here I am, unrehearsed, as it was "Just One of Those Things":

Haha, just kidding. SMOKIN'!!The weather was not my friend. My music was blowing all around and I could not get my clips to work at such short notice (when the sax player told me I was playing the lines). So I just "blew it off" and went without the music. Then the wind took my fingers and the rest is history.

And none of this would have been possible without Ultra Pure!

Ah, those (in)famous Kanstul valves. Bet your Getzen four-valve doesn't need oiling in the middle of a gig!

Damn I just hate it when you are right!
The Getzen is king when it comes to valve action. Actually I oiled the Kanstul prior to starting the gig, as this picture was taken during our set up. As it was a very humid day, and yes, those Kanstul valves are temperamental, especially with humidity, so I wasn't going to take a chance, and oiled them as a preventative action. It worked as those valves glided flawlessly. Such is the virtue of UltraPure!

By the way, check out the valve action on the Kanstul in this cut:

Outstanding. And Brenda Flowers definitely has got an Ella Fitzgerald vibe going on. A hint, at least.
