What happened to Jazz programming?

I just moved, changing my cable T.V. provider in the process. It has a bazillion music listening stations. Even FIVE country-type channels. But, dig, it has a "Classic Jazz" channel, which plays mainly music of the 50s and 60s and a "Soft Jazz" channel. That's it. There was no Jazz played and recorded between the 60s and now? What's that all about?

Not enough people out there that really understand Jazz. It’s like trying to read a service manual to a toddler. So they don’t bother to publish it

We had a jazz big band come to the apartments where I lived and gave a concert. Afterwards, several people were talking to me and asked what kind of music that was. I was trying to be gracious (instead of calling them illiterate idiots) and I said that it was Jazz. Each of them was a little dismayed said that they thought "Jazz" was music like "that old New Orleans stuff". Jeez. I may not care for much country music but I know who Faith Hill is.

Until I started studying Jazz as a kid, my mother thought Jazz was Guy Lombardo and thought she hated it. After being exposed to my Jazz education, she now has a collection that rivals mine and listens regularly! She plays flute quite well and took lessons growing up, even went to All State, but never really listened to anything but Classical and Rock before I was around.

Well, there’s been plenty of jazz recorded since the 60s for sure. Problem is, a lot of it isn’t worth listening to...lol

Matter of opinion, but I think there has been a ton of music in the 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000 and 2010s that equals in quality and quantity with pre-60s Jazz

SiriusXM has decent choices, and they have subscription promos. You can listen on almost any device, too.

Bob Parlocha ran a great jazz radio program out of Western Michigan University before he died.

That was a fantastic program...I was introduced to so many artists and their music.

Bob would read from liner notes to list the song, composer/arranger, who played each instrument, who played the solos...etc.

He would play such a broad sampling of music. Not just standards and the big names...and even though he was a sax player, you never saw any favoritism to sax artists in his program. It was always a perfect balance and always great quality.

WMU or Parlocha’s estate should compile those recordings/shows and make them available for sale. I know I would buy them.

Cool. I started out as a tween listening to a jazz show that came on at midnight. I had to hide from my parents, who thought I was sleeping. I think the host was Al "Jazzbo" Collins. He always started out talking about going into this grotto and listening to jazz there. It was kind of evocative and put you in an "aside" mood. Maybe that was the name of the show - Jazz Grotto.

But my main point of the thread is how musically illiterate our fractionalized society has become. When I lived in Germany, I don't think there was anybody who didn't know what you were talking about. They might not have liked all jazz but they were familiar with it. And it was the same way in America when I was a kid.

What happened? And is this just related to jazz, or other musics as well?

Hip Hop and the culture that goes with it have killed music!
So many people have been brainwashed by this trash. It has no movement, no key, no musicians, no melody to follow or counter and it is just a steady slow 4/4. Morons could follow it and do. People become morons when exposed to it. Can’t apply the circle of fifths to it
There’s no ABA pattern or anything. It’s been here for ~ 30 years and musical literacy has ebbed off with its rise.
We used to want a stereo that reproduced every little sound in stereo surround............
Then just big speakers that only put out the deepest bass-but not bass guitar or drums or horns but a mechanical frequency
It’s so bad now that lots of people are now again listening to one single speaker. Because there is no substance to reproduce

@djeffers78 With all due respect, your comments on Hip Hop are just incorrect. Like any genre there are more artistic and less artistic examples. I get that you don't like the style at all which is fine and your right, but saying that there's no movement, key, musicians or melody is incorrect-you just don't know if them and since you don't like the style you aren't going to look for any which again is your choice. If you are going to post you don't like it or you think it sucks that's not incorrect because that's how you feel, but saying it's trash or doesn't have a place is just factually wrong.
In addition, the previous idea that no good jazz was recorded from the 60's on is also absurd. John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Woody Shaw, Azar Laurence, Billy Harper.... it's a long list-and that's assuming the original poster doesn't like any electric jazz/creative music.

One of the bad things about the other trumpet site were posts that were insulting, putting other music or people down etc. which resulted in some pro trumpet players leaving due to negative snarky and narrow judgmental comments. I hope we don't evolve into that.... Stay safe and healthy everyone.

I don't intend to pile on, but I think the reasons for the general demise in the popularity of Jazz is much more complex than to hang it on one music genre.

To my ear most contemporary music is either a mind-numbing repetitive mantra of a standard rhythm and a prescribed minimum number of the same notes in the same prescribed key, always and exclusively sung by young males whose high voices have not changed into manhood or a Scrabble of notes sung in an endless, random journey to nowhere by a female with almost no overtones in the timbre of her coarse, lifeless voice. It baffles me that there seems to be an endless market for this crap.
