I have a Bach Tr300 that is in fine condition but is never used except for a back up in emergencies.
So recently I took it out to just give it a check and found that the third valve stops the air when not depressed. This has never happened to this trumpet or any other for that matter. Ever.
Yes, I did check the alignment twice, thrice, maybe fourteen times or so, in case you were thinking of asking.
Any idea what I might check to correct this? It is a decent back up horn, so I want to keep it functional.
Thanks. -

Thanks.Sounds like you may have a back up for a lamp now.

Have you run a snake through the third valve slide to make sure there's no obstruction?

Hurtful. Just hurtful.

That is something I plan to do, yes. BUT- here is why I am not in a huge hurry to try that: when third valve is depressed, the air goes through just fine.

It's probably stupid of me to ask this, but is there a chance that somehow the valves may have got mixed up ?

Depends on which way you turn the on/off switch

Instruments that have been lying around unplayed can get up to quirks of their own... A friend once presented me with a King Tempo cornet that just did not let any air through. Turned out someone in the previous history had stuffed chewing.gum into the tubing, just where the bell leaves #1 valve... another instrument proved to have a wasps' nest inside... and in another, the valve disintegrated into two parts when depressed; when not in use, it was ok... if you've got a proctologist for a friend, let him run his endoscope through the instrument in his leisure hours...

GeorgeNot stupid to ask. I thought it possible so I tried swapping valves around on my Getzen. Not sure I got all the combinations, but couldn't make it act anything like @bigdub's issue. Of course, different horn...

GeorgeWhen I put it away last, it was functioning perfectly, but every possibility needs to be checked, therefore I will.

All good ideas, but this hasn’t been laid up for that long, really. Not even a year.
Let me remind everybody, when I press the third valve all the way, air goes through. Open,, the air cannot pass through.

Could the third valve be in backwards? Valve guide installed backwards making it look right? -

Most valves have a number or numbers stamped on the spring housing. Are they all facing the same way?

I think they are. I will definitely double check that, though.

If worse comes to worse, Wayne, you are such a realist artist that you ciould just paint yourself a new 3rd valve...

And if in oils, the valve is slick for a lifetime of playing!

Great advice, everyone! Glad no one let too much logic get in the way.
That’s always such a buzzkill, anyway.
They will be filed in an appropriate place. Probably circular in shape.Just kidding. Like some of you…….

It's easy to install Bach valves backwards. Not so with Getzen. That was one of the things I always liked about Getzen.

...at my Mom's house in Kansas City for the holidays. (She's 99.) I leave my old Getzen Severinsen here at Mom's house and use it for practice when I am here. Bach Strad is my daily driver, but every time I come to Mom's and play the old Severinsen for a few days, I remember how good those Getzen valves are and how facile that old thing feels.
